Product details

Here is our interpretation of the GER/LNER Water Crane at Weybourne Station on the North Norfolk Railway. An almost necessity if you are running Steam locos as in real life they always need filling up. Weybourne station is also famous as appearing as Walmington-On-Sea station in the Dads Army episode, "The Royal Train"

Your order will come with the following  :
1 water crane
1 filling pipe
1 control stand

1 base
1 Counter weight

This crane requires some assembly which can be easily done with a little superglue. The hose and counter weight need to be glued and pegs/holes are there to make it easy to put together. You can use the base or plant the items directly to a yard or platform.

Check in our shop for the Weybourne water tank.

Ready for you to prime and paint, the pictures shown are painted examples for reference only and the train and water tank are also only for reference and not supplied.

This listing is for five resin printed pieces in grey.

Finishing: All items are cleaned and cured by hand. They are unassembled (if needed).  Halfords grey  primer, an ink wash and some Matt black acrylic are all that are needed to finish.(also shown is the actual crane in situ at Weybourne run by the NNR)

We do our very best to remove support marks but some fine sanding may be required.

All pieces and parts come unprimed and unpainted with all supports removed.

Please do bear in mind that resin can be quite delicate so try to avoid dropping your parts! Sadly, we can't be held responsible for breakages once your item has arrived. However, if the piece is broken in the post, please provide images and we will see what we can do to help.

FAQ – Product FAQs

GER/LNER Weybourne Water Crane – Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is included with this Weybourne water crane kit?

Your order includes five grey resin-printed parts: 1 water crane, 1 filling pipe (hose), 1 control stand, 1 base and 1 counterweight. All supports are removed and the parts come unprimed and unpainted, ready for assembly, priming and painting.

Is this a working water crane or a static model?

This is a static model railway accessory. It is designed to represent the GER/LNER water crane at Weybourne Station on the North Norfolk Railway and to add realistic steam-era detail to your layout, but it does not function as a real water supply.

Does this model match the real Weybourne water crane?

This is our interpretation of the GER/LNER water crane at Weybourne Station, as seen on the North Norfolk Railway. It is inspired by the real crane in situ at Weybourne and is intended to capture its overall look and character for use on model layouts.

Is the train and water tank shown in photos included?

No. Any trains and the Weybourne water tank shown in reference photos are not included. This listing is only for the five resin-printed water crane pieces. If you would like the matching water tank, please check our shop for the separate Weybourne water tank listing.

Is this model suitable for steam-era layouts?

Yes. A water crane is an almost essential scenic item for steam-era layouts, as steam locomotives always needed water in real life. This model is ideal for adding operational realism to steam depot scenes, station platforms or yard areas.

Is the model supplied painted like in the pictures?

No. The model is supplied unprimed and unpainted in grey resin. The painted examples shown are for reference only, to give you an idea of how the crane can look once finished.

My crane arrived with a broken part from the post. What should I do?

If your crane has clearly been damaged in transit, please take clear photos of the damage and contact us. We cannot take responsibility for breakages after safe delivery, but if it was broken in the post we will see what we can do to help.

How delicate is the resin, and how should I handle it?

Resin can be quite delicate, especially on thinner parts like the hose and counterweight arm. Handle the parts gently, avoid dropping them, and try not to put pressure on fine details during assembly and painting.

Will I need to remove any supports myself?

No. All supports are removed before we send your order. The parts are cleaned and cured by hand, so you should only need to do a little light sanding where necessary before priming and painting.

Can I mount the crane directly to my layout instead of using the base?

Yes. You can either use the supplied base or plant the crane, control stand, hose and counterweight directly into your yard or platform surface. This gives you flexibility in how you integrate it into your scene.

Is this suitable for beginners to scenic detailing?

Yes. The assembly is straightforward, with pegs and holes to help locate parts, and only a little superglue is required. As long as you take your time and handle the resin carefully, it is very approachable even if you are fairly new to detailing and painting.

Can this crane be used on layouts not based on Weybourne?

Absolutely. While it is based on the Weybourne prototype, it will look at home on many GER/LNER or generic British steam-era layouts, especially on small country stations or heritage-style setups.

My parts don’t seem to fit together properly. What can I check?

If parts feel tight or slightly misaligned, check for:

  • Any small bits of cured resin or support nubs left in the peg holes.
  • Paint or primer buildup if you primed before test-fitting.
  • Slight warping from heat or storage.

Gently clean or lightly sand the peg and hole areas, test-fit again without glue, and only then fix in place with a small amount of superglue.

The hose or counterweight came loose after gluing. How can I fix it?

Carefully remove any old glue from the joint, lightly roughen the mating surfaces with fine sandpaper, and re-glue with a small drop of fresh superglue. Hold the parts in place until the bond has set. Avoid overloading the joint with glue, as this can weaken the bond and obscure detail.

There are visible support marks or layer lines. What should I do?

We do our very best to remove support marks, but some fine sanding may still be required. Use fine wet-and-dry paper or sanding sticks (e.g. 600–1000 grit) to gently smooth any visible marks, taking care not to flatten sharp detail. Once primed, most minor marks will disappear.

My crane looks slightly warped. Can it be straightened?

Mild warping can sometimes be eased by very gently warming the part in lukewarm (not hot) water, carefully bending it back to shape, and holding it in position while it cools. Always test on a less visible area first and avoid high heat, as resin can deform permanently.

The crane feels fragile when I handle it. Is that normal?

Yes. Resin models, especially with fine detail, will feel more fragile than chunky plastic kits. Handle the crane by its thicker sections where possible, support it from underneath during assembly, and avoid applying pressure to the hose and counterweight arm.

How do I assemble the crane and its parts?

This crane requires some simple assembly using a little superglue. The hose (filling pipe) and counterweight need to be glued in place, and the pegs and holes on the parts help you locate everything correctly. Test-fit all parts dry first, then glue once you are happy with the alignment.

Should I use the base or mount directly to my platform?

You can do either. The supplied base is handy if you want to be able to move the crane or place it on a removable scenic module. If you prefer a more integrated look, you can fix the crane, control stand, hose and counterweight directly into your yard or platform surface.

When should I prime: before or after assembly?

You can do it either way, but many modellers prefer to assemble the main structure first, then prime. Small sub-assemblies like the hose and counterweight can be primed separately if you find that easier to paint. Just make sure any mating surfaces are clean and free of thick primer before gluing.

What products do you recommend for priming and painting?

The model is ready for you to prime and paint. A simple finishing route is:

  • Halfords grey primer for the base coat.
  • An ink wash to bring out the detail and add depth.
  • Matt black acrylic for key details and pipework.

From there, you can add weathering and additional colours to taste.

How can I get a realistic weathered look like the real crane?

After priming and base-coating, use thin ink washes to pick out recesses, then dry-brush lighter shades on edges to simulate wear. A little rust colouring around joints, bolts and the hose, plus some subtle grime streaks down the column, will help echo the look of the real Weybourne crane.
