FAQ – NER Water Crane at Goathland Station (O Gauge / 7mm)
What exactly is included in this NER Water Crane kit?
Your order includes one water crane, one overflow tank, one water valve, one stand, one base, one counterweight and one hose. The kit is supplied as resin printed pieces in grey, ready for you to assemble, prime and paint.
What scale is this model and what prototype does it represent?
This is an O Gauge / 7mm model of the NER Water Crane at Goathland Station. It is based on the real crane in situ at Goathland station, as seen on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).
Is this a working water crane or a static model?
This is a static scenic model intended as a detail item for layouts running steam locomotives. It is designed to represent a water crane and overflow tank visually, rather than function as a working water supply.
Are the photos shown of the actual product?
The photos are painted examples provided for reference only, to show how the finished model can look. All items you receive will be unprimed, unpainted resin printed pieces in grey, with supports removed.
Is there a version with a cone on the top?
Yes, there is a version of this water crane with a cone on the top. Please check our shop listings specifically for the cone-topped version if that’s the look you are after.
How delicate is the resin, and how should I handle it?
Resin can be quite delicate, especially on finer details. Handle the parts carefully, avoid dropping them, and take care when sanding, assembling and transporting your models. We cannot be responsible for breakages after delivery, but if something arrives broken in the post, please send photos and we will see what we can do to help.
What should I do if a part arrives damaged in the post?
If your kit arrives with damage from transit, please take clear photos of the affected parts and the packaging and contact us. We will review the images and do our best to help resolve the issue.
Can I mount the crane directly into my layout instead of using the supplied base?
Yes. You can either glue the crane and associated parts to the supplied base, or free-mount the crane directly into a platform or by the side of your track, depending on how you want it to sit in your scene.
Are the parts supplied fully cleaned and cured?
Yes. All items are cleaned and cured by hand before dispatch. They come with all supports removed, though you may still wish to do some fine sanding to achieve your preferred finish.
Do I need to do any sanding or surface preparation?
We do our very best to remove support marks, but some fine sanding may be required to achieve a smooth finish. Lightly sanding any visible layer lines or support marks before priming will give the best painting results.
Which parts of the kit need assembly?
Only minor assembly is required. The hose and counterweight need attaching to the crane. The parts are designed with pegs and matching holes to make positioning straightforward; a small dab of superglue will secure them in place.
What type of glue should I use for assembly?
A small amount of superglue (cyanoacrylate) works well for attaching the hose and counterweight, and for fixing the crane to the base or directly to your layout. Apply sparingly to avoid excess glue marks.
How should I mount the crane and overflow tank on my layout?
You can:
- Glue the crane, overflow tank and associated parts to the supplied base, then fix the base to your layout, or
- Free-mount the crane and tank directly into a prepared hole in a platform or beside the track, if you prefer a more integrated look.
Do I need to prime the model before painting?
Yes. The parts are supplied unprimed and unpainted, so a good primer coat is recommended before applying any colours. Priming helps paint adhere better and reveals any areas that might benefit from a little extra sanding.
What paints and finishes were used on the example model?
The painted examples shown were finished using Halfords red primer, followed by an ink wash and some matt black acrylic. You can follow a similar approach or use your preferred paints and weathering methods to match your layout.
Can I use other brands of primer and paint?
Yes. While the example uses Halfords red primer and matt black acrylic, you can use other hobby primers and acrylic paints suitable for resin models. Just ensure your primer is compatible with resin and your chosen paint system.
How can I achieve a realistic weathered look?
A simple approach is:
- Prime the model to give an even base coat.
- Apply your main colour coats (for metalwork and pipework).
- Use an ink wash to bring out details and simulate grime and water staining.
- Add touches of matt black acrylic to suggest soot, oil and heavy use around the spout and valve areas.
Is any drilling or modification needed during assembly?
No drilling is required for the basic assembly. The hose and counterweight are designed with pegs and holes so they can be attached directly with superglue. You may, however, choose to drill or modify your baseboard or platform if you are free-mounting the crane into your layout surface.
Can I repaint or strip the model if I am not happy with my first attempt?
Yes. If you are not satisfied with your first paint job, you can carefully strip the paint using a resin-safe paint stripper and then re-prime and repaint. Always test any stripping product on a hidden area first to ensure it does not damage the resin.
