FAQ – Product FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What scale is this driver figure?

The driver is G-Scale 1:22.5 and stands at approximately 78 mm tall. This makes him suitable for layouts similar in scale to LGB, Bachmann and other G-scale manufacturers.

Is the figure painted or unpainted?

The figure is supplied unpainted. This allows you to finish him in the colours and railway company style that best match your own layout or stock.

How are these figures created?

The figures are 3D scanned from real people to capture realistic body shapes, clothing folds and natural poses, and then printed in high detail resin here in the UK.

What material is the figure made from?

The figure is printed in high detail resin. Resin gives crisp detail for faces, clothing and small features, which is ideal for close-up viewing on G-scale layouts.

How is the item shipped and what is the condition?

Each figure is supplied new, cleaned and cured by hand, and dispatched by Royal Mail 2nd Class. The packaging is eco-friendly, using recyclable exterior materials and interior packing made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

Is this product suitable for children?

No. These figures are not toys and are not suitable for minors. They contain small parts and can pose a choking hazard, so they are intended for adult collectors and model railway enthusiasts.

What primer should I use before painting?

The figure can be primed with Halfords grey primer or Tamiya fine surface primer. Both give a good base for most hobby paints to adhere to and help bring out the fine detail.

Do I need to do any preparation before priming?

All items are cleaned and cured by hand, but the figure may require some minor finishing before painting. This can include lightly removing any small print artefacts or smoothing tiny imperfections with fine sanding sticks or files.

Can I use other brands of primer or paint?

The figure is compatible with most standard hobby primers and acrylic or enamel model paints. The recommended primers are Halfords grey primer and Tamiya fine surface primer, as they have been tested on this resin, but many modellers successfully use other brands that are suitable for resin miniatures.

Can this driver be used both in the cab and around the yard?

Yes. The pose is suitable for use as a driver either mounted in the cab or working around the yard, so you can position him wherever he best fits your scene.

Is this figure licensed?

Yes. The figure is sold under commercial license from Design Scan Print 3D.

Is the packaging environmentally friendly?

Yes. The exterior packaging is made in part from recycled materials and is fully recyclable. The interior packing materials are acid free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

What should I do if the figure arrives broken?

If the piece is damaged in the post, please take clear photos of the damage and contact us. While we cannot be responsible for breakages after safe delivery, we will always try to help put things right if it was damaged during transit.

The resin looks slightly rough in places. Is this normal?

Minor surface texture or small marks can occur with high detail resin printing, even after cleaning and curing. These are usually easy to tidy with gentle sanding or a light scrape with a hobby knife before priming.

My figure has a slight bend or warp. Can it be corrected?

Resin can sometimes show a slight bend on thin parts. This can often be improved by briefly dipping the affected area in warm (not boiling) water, gently straightening it, and then holding it in place under cold water. Always work slowly and carefully to avoid snapping delicate parts.

The primer is not sticking well. What can I do?

If primer beads or does not adhere evenly, try the following:

  • Lightly wash the figure in warm, soapy water and let it dry fully.
  • Apply several light coats of primer rather than one heavy coat.
  • Ensure you are using a resin-safe primer such as Halfords grey primer or Tamiya fine surface primer.

What if small details break off during handling?

Resin is delicate, so small details can break if knocked or dropped. If a minor break occurs, you can usually repair it with a small amount of cyanoacrylate (super glue). For larger breaks, please contact us with photos if you believe it may have been damaged in transit.

Why is resin described as delicate?

Resin allows for very fine detail, but that detail can also be fragile. Thin parts and protruding details are especially vulnerable to knocks and drops, so it is best to handle the figure gently and avoid dropping it on hard surfaces.

Do I need to remove any supports?

All items are cleaned and cured by hand before dispatch, so any major supports will already have been removed. You may occasionally find a small nub or mark where a support was attached; this can be carefully trimmed or sanded smooth before priming.

How should I clean the figure before painting?

Even though the figure has been cleaned, a quick wash will help paint adhesion. Gently wash it in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, use a soft brush if needed, then rinse and let it dry completely before priming.

What type of paints work best on this figure?

Most hobby acrylic or enamel paints designed for plastic or resin miniatures work well once the figure is properly primed. Many modellers prefer acrylics for ease of use and quick drying, but the choice is yours.

Do you have any basic painting tips for this driver?

After priming, it can help to:

  • Start with base colours for clothing, skin and boots.
  • Add simple shading with a slightly darker tone in folds and recesses.
  • Finish with small highlights on raised areas to bring out the 3D scanned detail.

Can I modify or convert the figure?

Yes, many modellers enjoy converting figures. The resin can be carefully cut, drilled or filled with standard modelling tools and putties. Just remember that the material is delicate, so take your time and support any thin areas while working.

How should I mount the figure on my layout or in a cab?

You can fix the figure in place with a small amount of cyanoacrylate (super glue) or another suitable modelling adhesive. For cab mounting, test-fit first to find the best position, and consider lightly trimming the base of the feet if you need a slightly different stance or height.
