Product details

This is a model of a Deutsch Bahn Volkswagen Inspection car to use on a shortened KATO 109 chassis. Popular in Europe, but with the right paint could appear on any layout (Rule #1). The chassis are easy to shorten, see the pics. Pop out the motor and then cut down the body to 42mm and refit the chassis. It then still clicks easily into place. The main body is then a drop fit onto the sub chassis to allow for painting prior to assembly. The kit is printed using high detail resin in the UK. The sale is for the body and the sub-chassis only, it is unpainted and without the Kato chassis which is shown for information purposes only. The first picture is of the actual vehicle (not included in sale) The kit may require some minor finishing if required before painting. Condition is New and is dispatched by Royal Mail. (Royal Mail in the UK and Royal Mail for worldwide). Our packaging is Eco friendly, the exterior packing is made in part from Recycled Materials and is fully recyclable, the interior packing materials are acid free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.
Finishing: All items are cleaned and cured by hand. They are unassembled (if needed). Ready for you to prime and paint.
We do our very best to remove support marks but some fine sanding may be required.
All pieces and parts come unprimed and unpainted with all supports removed.
Please do bear in mind that resin can be quite delicate so try to avoid dropping your parts! Sadly, we cant be held responsible for breakages once your item has arrived. However, if the piece is broken in the post, please provide images and we will see what we can do to help to make things good.

FAQ – Product FAQs

Deutsch Bahn Volkswagen Inspection Car – FAQ

What exactly is included in this kit?

The kit includes the high-detail resin main body and the matching sub-chassis for the Deutsch Bahn Volkswagen Inspection car. It is supplied unassembled (if needed), unprimed, and unpainted. The KATO 109 chassis and the real vehicle shown in some photos are not included and are for information only.

What scale and chassis is this designed for?

This body is designed specifically to fit a shortened KATO 109 chassis. The chassis needs to be cut down to 42 mm as described in the product details. The model is popular on European layouts, but with suitable paintwork it can be used on any layout that suits your imagination.

Is the model pre-painted or pre-primed?

No, the model is supplied unprimed and unpainted. All parts are cleaned, cured, and have supports removed, so they are ready for you to prime and paint in your preferred livery.

How is the kit produced?

The body and sub-chassis are 3D printed in the UK using high-detail resin. Each item is cleaned and cured by hand, and support structures are removed before dispatch. Some very minor finishing or fine sanding may still be required before painting.

How is the kit packaged and shipped?

The kit is dispatched by Royal Mail within the UK and worldwide. Packaging is eco-friendly: the outer packaging is partly made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable, while the inner packing is acid-free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

Is the model durable?

The resin captures fine detail but can be delicate, especially around thinner sections. It will stand up to normal handling on a layout, but it is not a toy and should be treated with care. Avoid dropping or twisting parts, particularly during assembly and painting.

The KATO 109 chassis does not seem to fit. What should I check?

First, confirm that the chassis has been shortened correctly to 42 mm. Ensure the motor has been removed before shortening, and that the cut is square and clean. Check for any stray resin or flash inside the body or sub-chassis that might obstruct the chassis. The shortened chassis should still click into place once everything is aligned.

The body does not sit properly on the sub-chassis. How can I fix this?

Make sure the sub-chassis is fully seated on the KATO chassis and that no paint, primer, or debris is blocking the locating surfaces. A light test-fit before painting is recommended. If necessary, gently sand any high spots or printing artefacts on the mating faces until the body drops neatly onto the sub-chassis.

I can see faint support marks and layer lines. Is this normal?

Yes, very fine support marks or layer lines can be visible even after supports are removed. These are usually minimal. A little light sanding with fine-grit abrasive (e.g. 800–1200 grit) will smooth the surface before priming. Take care not to over-sand sharp details.

My model arrived damaged in the post. What should I do?

If the kit appears to have been damaged in transit, please take clear photos of the damage and the packaging as soon as possible. Contact the seller with these images so they can assess the situation and see what can be done to put things right.

I broke a part while handling or assembling it. Can this be replaced?

Resin can be delicate, and unfortunately the seller cannot be held responsible for breakages that occur after delivery. You are welcome to get in touch to discuss options, but replacement for accidental damage cannot be guaranteed.

How do I shorten the KATO 109 chassis to 42 mm?

Remove the motor from the KATO 109 chassis first. Then carefully cut down the chassis body to 42 mm in length, keeping the cut square. Once shortened, refit the chassis components. The modified chassis should still click easily into place within the sub-chassis and body.

Should I assemble the model before or after painting?

The kit is designed so that the main body is a drop fit onto the sub-chassis. This allows you to paint the body and sub-chassis separately for a cleaner finish. Most modellers will:

  • Test-fit the parts unpainted
  • Prime and paint the body and sub-chassis separately
  • Then assemble everything once the paint has fully cured

What preparation is needed before priming and painting?

Although the parts are cleaned and cured by hand, it is still good practice to:

  • Inspect for any remaining support marks or slight roughness and lightly sand if needed
  • Ensure the surfaces are free from dust and fingerprints
  • Test-fit the body on the sub-chassis to confirm alignment before applying primer
This will help you achieve a smooth, durable paint finish.

What type of paint and primer should I use?

Use paints and primers suitable for resin miniatures or plastic models. A good quality spray or airbrush primer designed for resin will give the best key for your paint. Always apply light coats and allow each layer to dry thoroughly. Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions for thinning and curing times.

Can I model this vehicle for non-European layouts?

Yes. While the prototype is a Deutsch Bahn Volkswagen Inspection car popular in Europe, you can paint it in any livery that suits your layout. With the right colours and weathering, it can represent a freelance inspection or maintenance vehicle under “Rule #1” on almost any layout.
