Product details

This is a neat little caddy holder for the Gaugemaster combi controller. Its a controller I use on my lateste shelf OO9 and this caddy is used as holder for the controller. I prefer this raised layout instead of having the controller loose on the table. The cutouts can be used to thread the cables for the power and accessories to keep them tidy if preferred. It also has holes to fix the caddy down as well if preferred. The kit takes paint well but looks just fine in its natural state.

The kit is precision laser cut, comes flat packed and is a simple glue together task with some wood glue. Also provided is a green felt backing to provide a snug soft fit for the controller.

Two holes are available in the base so it can be screwed down as well if you like.

(the controller in the pic is not included of course)

FAQ – Product FAQs

What is this caddy holder designed for?

This caddy holder is specifically designed for the Gaugemaster Combi controller. It provides a neat, raised mounting point so the controller is not left loose on the table, making it easier and more comfortable to use on layouts such as shelf OO9 setups.

Does the caddy include the Gaugemaster Combi controller?

No, the Gaugemaster Combi controller is not included. The photos showing the controller are for illustration only. This product is the laser-cut caddy kit and the green felt backing to support your own controller.

How is the caddy supplied?

The caddy is supplied flat packed as a precision laser-cut kit. You assemble it yourself using wood glue. Once built, it forms a sturdy holder for your Gaugemaster Combi controller.

Can I fix the caddy permanently to my layout or control panel?

Yes, there are two holes in the base of the caddy so you can screw it down if you wish. This is handy for permanent control panels or portable layouts where you do not want the controller sliding around.

How are the cables managed with this caddy?

The caddy includes cutouts that can be used to thread the power and accessory cables. This helps keep the wiring tidy and reduces the risk of snagging cables when operating your layout.

What is the green felt backing for?

The supplied green felt backing is used inside the caddy to provide a snug, soft fit for the Gaugemaster Combi controller. It helps prevent scratching and keeps the controller from rattling in the holder.

What glue should I use to assemble the kit?

The kit is designed to be assembled with standard wood glue. Apply a thin, even layer to the mating edges, press the parts together, and allow sufficient drying time before placing the controller in the caddy or screwing it down.

Do I need any special tools to build the caddy?

Assembly is straightforward and does not require special tools. Most modellers will find the following helpful:

  • Wood glue
  • Small clamps or elastic bands to hold parts while the glue dries
  • A small screwdriver if you plan to screw the caddy down
  • A sharp knife or scissors to trim the felt if needed

How long does assembly take?

Actual construction time is quite short, typically only a few minutes of gluing and positioning the parts. Allow additional time for the wood glue to fully cure before putting the controller in place or fixing the caddy to your layout.

Can I use this caddy with controllers other than the Gaugemaster Combi?

The caddy is designed around the Gaugemaster Combi controller. Other controllers may not fit correctly, so for best results it should be used with the Gaugemaster Combi as intended.

My parts don’t seem to fit together properly. What should I check?

First, make sure each piece is oriented correctly; laser-cut parts often have a “best” side and may be keyed to only fit one way. Check that:

  • Any protective dust or small tabs from the laser cutting are gently removed.
  • You are matching the correct edges and slots as per the layout shown in the product photos.
  • No excess glue is preventing the parts from seating fully.

The controller feels loose in the caddy. How can I improve the fit?

Ensure the green felt backing is installed where the controller rests. If it still feels loose, you can:

  • Add an extra layer of felt or a thin strip of card under the felt to tighten the fit.
  • Check that the caddy has fully dried and is not flexing due to still-wet glue.

The caddy rocks or doesn’t sit flat on the surface. How do I fix this?

Place the caddy on a known flat surface and check for any twisted joints or dried glue lumps under the base. You can gently sand any high spots on the underside. If you plan to screw it down, the screws will also help pull it flat against your baseboard or panel.

The cable cutouts don’t line up with my existing wiring. What can I do?

You can usually re-route your cables slightly so they pass through the provided cutouts. If that is not convenient, you can simply run the cables over the edge of the caddy instead; the cutouts are optional aids, not a requirement for use.

Glue has squeezed out and marked the visible surfaces. How can I tidy it up?

While the glue is still wet, wipe it away gently with a damp cloth or cotton bud. Once dry, small glue marks can often be reduced by light sanding before painting. Take care not to sand through any edges or details.

Does the kit need to be painted?

No, the kit looks perfectly fine in its natural state and can be used as-is. Many modellers are happy to leave it unpainted, especially for quick setup on a working layout.

What type of paint works well on this caddy?

The kit takes paint well. You can use typical model paints suitable for wood or similar laser-cut materials. Apply light coats and allow each coat to dry fully. Always avoid getting paint on the felt or in the cable cutouts where it might build up.

Should I paint the parts before or after assembly?

Either approach can work. Many modellers prefer to:

  • Dry-assemble and test fit first.
  • Glue the main structure together.
  • Paint once the glue is fully dry.

This helps ensure all joints are strong and that paint does not interfere with the glue bond.

How do I fit the green felt neatly?

Test-fit the felt first to see how it sits against the controller. If needed, lightly trim it with a sharp knife or scissors. A few small dabs of glue on the back of the felt will hold it in place; press it down firmly and allow it to dry before inserting the controller.

Can I weather or detail the caddy to match my layout?

Yes, you can paint and weather the caddy to blend in with your control panel or layout theme. For example, you might match your baseboard colour, add a simple edge highlight, or lightly weather it to look like a well-used piece of railway equipment.
