Product details

This is a neat little desktop holder for the Bachmann EZ DCC controller. The controller is a great entry level DCC unit and I use it on various shelf and diorama layouts , however its always awkward to store with the power brick and leads. This design means that not only that the controller is more ergonomical to use being slightly angled, but also that the leads and power brick can be stored away underneath when not in use. Its really good to keep it in place when being used and keeps it all neat and tidy when running operations are over for the day. The cutout on the back ensures that all the legends for the controller leads and power points are unobstructed. The kit can be painted as well if you like as it is MDF.

The kit comes as a flat packed precision laser cut unit and can be put together in under 15 minutes with just a little wood glue, use any of the main white glue brands. Other Bachman DCC Controllers will also probably fit where they have the same case design. It comes with a precision cut green felt backing to provide both a snug and soft fit for the controller with all the cutouts in place.

NOTE: the DCC controller in the pic is of course not included : )

FAQ – Product FAQs

What is this product designed for?

This is a desktop holder specifically designed for the Bachmann EZ DCC controller. It keeps the controller slightly angled for more comfortable use and provides space underneath to tuck away the power brick and leads when you are not running trains.

Does the holder include the Bachmann EZ DCC controller?

No, the Bachmann EZ DCC controller is not included. The product is the MDF holder kit only; the controller shown in any pictures is for illustration purposes.

What material is the holder made from?

The holder is made from precision laser-cut MDF. This makes it sturdy, easy to glue together, and ideal if you want to paint or weather it to match your layout or workbench.

How does this holder help with cable management?

The design allows you to store the power brick and leads underneath the controller. When you are finished operating, you can coil the cables and tuck them under the holder so everything stays neat and tidy on your desk or layout shelf.

Will other Bachmann DCC controllers fit in this holder?

Other Bachmann DCC controllers will probably fit if they share the same case design as the Bachmann EZ DCC controller. If you are unsure, compare the case shape and size with the EZ DCC unit before purchasing.

Can I still see the connection legends on the back of the controller?

Yes. There is a cutout at the back of the holder so the legends for the controller leads and power points remain unobstructed, making it easy to plug everything in correctly.

Why is the controller angled in the holder?

The holder is designed to tilt the controller slightly, making the controls easier to see and reach when you are operating. This more ergonomic angle is especially handy on shelf and diorama layouts where space is tight.

What comes in the kit?

The kit arrives flat packed and includes the precision laser-cut MDF parts for the holder and a precision-cut green felt backing. The felt provides a snug, soft fit for the controller, with all cutouts aligned to the controller’s shape.

How long does assembly take?

Most modellers can assemble the holder in under 15 minutes. The parts are precision cut, so they slot together quickly with a little wood glue.

Do I need any special tools to build it?

No special tools are required. You will just need a small amount of wood glue (any of the main white glue brands is fine). A scrap brush or cocktail stick can help spread the glue neatly, but it is not essential.

Is the green felt backing included?

Yes, the kit includes a precision-cut green felt backing. It lines the holder so the controller sits snugly without scratching, and the felt has all the necessary cutouts already in place.

Can this holder be used on a layout as well as a desk?

Yes, it works nicely on desks, shelves, and small diorama layouts. The holder keeps the controller stable during use and makes it easy to stow the leads underneath when you are finished running trains.

The controller feels loose or too tight in the holder. What should I check?

First, ensure all MDF parts are fully pushed together and the glue has dried. Then check that the green felt backing is correctly seated and not folded or bunched. The controller should sit within the felted area; if it is resting on bare MDF edges, it may feel loose or sit at the wrong angle.

The power brick and leads do not seem to fit underneath. Am I assembling it wrong?

Check that the holder is fully assembled and that you are placing the power brick and leads in the space underneath the controller, not behind it. Coil the leads neatly and place the power brick first, then lay the coiled cables around it. If parts are misaligned, gently loosen and re-seat the MDF joints before the glue fully sets.

I cannot see the legends for the leads and power points on the back of the controller.

Make sure the controller is pushed fully forward into the felted recess so it lines up with the rear cutout. If the holder has been assembled with any panel reversed, the cutout might not match the controller. Compare your build to the product photos and, if needed, carefully disassemble and reassemble before the glue fully cures.

The holder rocks or wobbles on my desk. How can I fix this?

Place the holder on a known flat surface and check that all corners are resting evenly. If a joint is slightly misaligned, gently press the frame into square while the glue is still setting. Once dry, you can also add thin self-adhesive pads or tape under any high corner to stabilise it.

Glue has squeezed out onto the visible surfaces. What can I do?

While the glue is still wet, wipe it away with a damp cloth or cotton bud. If it has dried, carefully scrape or sand the excess glue with fine sandpaper. This will also help prepare the surface if you plan to paint the holder later.

How should I assemble the MDF parts?

Lay out all the MDF pieces and do a dry fit first without glue so you can see how everything slots together. Once you are happy with the fit, apply a thin bead of white wood glue to the joints, press the parts together, and wipe away any excess glue. Allow it to dry fully before inserting the controller.

When should I fit the green felt backing?

Fit the green felt backing after the MDF structure is assembled and the glue has dried. Make sure the felt is aligned with the cutouts so the controller’s sockets and legends remain visible. Press it down firmly so it adheres flat and does not bunch up under the controller.

Can I paint the MDF holder?

Yes, the MDF is ideal for painting. You can leave it natural, or paint and weather it to match your layout or workshop. Just avoid soaking the MDF with very watery paint and allow each coat to dry fully before handling.

Should I paint before or after assembly?

Either approach works. Many modellers prefer to assemble first, lightly sand any joints, and then paint so the colour is consistent across all surfaces. If you paint before assembly, keep paint out of the joints so the parts still slot together cleanly.

Do I need to prepare the MDF before painting?

For the best finish, lightly sand any rough edges and remove dust before painting. If you want a very smooth, sealed surface, you can apply a suitable MDF or craft sealer, then paint once it is dry.

Can I add weathering or detailing to the holder?

Yes, you can treat it like any other scenic item. Once painted, you can add dry-brushing, washes, or subtle weathering powders to give it a workshop or control-panel look that fits your layout’s style.
