FAQ – Product FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What scale is this driver figure?

The figure is G-Scale 1:22 and stands at approximately 75 mm tall, making it suitable for layouts that use LGB, Bachmann and similar G-scale stock.

Is the figure suitable as a locomotive driver?

Yes, the figure is designed to work as a driver either mounted in a cab or standing around in the yard, so you can use him in a variety of realistic operating scenes.

How are these figures created?

The figures are 3D scanned from real people to capture realistic proportions, facial features and natural poses, and then printed in high-detail resin here in the UK.

Is the figure supplied painted?

No, the figure is supplied unpainted so you can finish it to match your railway’s era, railway company and weathering style.

How is the figure packaged and shipped?

The figure is dispatched by Royal Mail 2nd Class in eco-friendly packaging. The outer packing uses recycled materials and is fully recyclable, and the inner packing is acid-free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

Is this product suitable for children?

No, these figures are not toys and are not suitable for minors. They contain small parts and can pose a choking hazard, so they should be kept out of reach of children.

What material is the figure printed in?

The figure is printed in high detail resin, which allows for fine detail and realistic textures but should be handled with care as resin can be delicate.

Does the figure need any preparation before painting?

All items are cleaned and cured by hand, but the figure may require some minor finishing such as light sanding or trimming before you apply primer and paint.

What primers are recommended?

You can use Halfords grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer on this resin figure. Both give a good key for acrylic or enamel paints and help reveal any areas that need a final tidy-up.

Can I use this figure outdoors on a garden railway?

The figure is G-scale and well suited to garden railways in terms of size. As with any resin model, if used outdoors you should use a suitable primer and paint, and consider a clear protective coat to help it cope with the elements.

Can I modify or convert the figure?

Yes, you can carefully trim, reposition or add details to the resin figure as you would with other resin castings. Just work slowly, support any thin parts, and use sharp tools to avoid stressing the resin.

Under what license is this figure sold?

The figure is sold under commercial license from Design Scan Print 3D.

The figure arrived broken. What should I do?

If the figure has been damaged in the post, please take clear photos of the damage and the packaging and contact the seller. They will review the images and see what can be done to put things right.

What if I break the figure after it arrives?

Resin can be delicate and breakages after delivery are not the seller’s responsibility. However, you can often repair minor breaks with a good quality cyanoacrylate (super glue) and a steady hand.

Why does my figure have small lines or marks?

Because each figure is 3D printed and finished by hand, you may see very fine print lines or tiny support marks. These are normal and can usually be smoothed with light sanding or a little filler before priming.

The figure does not stand perfectly on its own. How can I fix this?

If the base or feet are slightly uneven, gently sand the underside on fine sandpaper laid flat on a hard surface until the figure stands as you want. Many modellers also fix the figure to a base or directly to the layout for extra stability.

The primer is not adhering well. What can I do?

First, make sure the figure is clean and free from dust or fingerprints. Wash it gently in warm soapy water, let it dry completely, and then re-prime using a light mist coat of a recommended primer such as Halfords grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer.

How should I handle the figure to avoid damage?

Handle the figure by the sturdier parts of the body, avoid bending thin details, and try not to drop it. When working on it at the bench, a soft cloth or foam pad under the model helps protect it from knocks.

Do I need to wash the figure before painting?

Although the figures are cleaned and cured by hand, many modellers like to give resin parts a quick wash in warm water with a drop of mild detergent, then rinse and air dry, to ensure the best possible paint adhesion.

What type of paints work best on this figure?

Once primed with Halfords grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, you can use most hobby acrylics or enamels designed for models. Apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat to preserve the fine detail from the 3D scanning.

How can I get a realistic driver look?

After priming, build up colours in thin layers, starting with base colours for clothing and skin, then adding shading and highlights. A light wash in the creases and a dry-brush on raised details will help bring out the realistic pose and facial features.

Can I glue the figure into my locomotive cab?

Yes, once painted and fully dry you can fix the figure in place with a small amount of suitable model glue. Test the position first to ensure he fits comfortably in the cab or on the footplate.

Do I need to remove any supports or sprues?

The figures are supplied cleaned and cured, but you may occasionally find a small remnant of a support or sprue. Carefully trim it away with a sharp hobby knife or fine file before priming and painting.
