FAQ – Hugh Dowding & Companion Memorial Resin Models
What exactly is included in this set?
The sale is for the two unpainted memorial models shown in the product photos. Both pieces are around 50mm tall. Any other figures, such as the photographer, are shown only for scale and are not included.
Who is the figure depicted in one of the memorials?
One of the memorials features the figure of Hugh Dowding, the Air Chief Marshal in World War II, as seen on the Strand in London.
What material are the models made from?
The models are printed in high-detail resin. We print them ourselves here in the UK.
Do the models come painted or primed?
No, all pieces come unprimed and unpainted. They are ready for you to prime and paint in your own style.
Are the models assembled when they arrive?
All items are supplied unassembled if needed. Any separate parts will arrive loose, ready for you to assemble, prime and paint.
How delicate are these resin models?
Resin can be quite delicate, especially with fine details. Please handle the models carefully and try to avoid dropping them or applying excessive pressure.
What finishing work has been done before shipping?
All items are cleaned and cured by hand. We remove supports and do our very best to tidy up support marks before sending the models out.
Will I need to do any sanding or cleanup?
Yes, some fine sanding or light cleanup may still be required to achieve the smoothest finish, especially on any remaining support marks or mould lines.
Are these suitable for any particular scale?
The memorials are approximately 50mm tall. They are often used on model railway layouts and dioramas as scenic features, but you can use them in any setting where the size suits your scene.
Can I use these models outdoors or in a garden railway?
The models are resin and can be used outdoors if they are properly primed, painted and sealed. However, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight and weather may affect the finish over time, so a good protective varnish is recommended.
What should I do if a part arrives broken?
If the piece is broken in the post, please take clear photos of the damage and contact us. We will of course see what we can do to help.
Are you responsible for damage after delivery?
We cannot be held responsible for breakages once your item has arrived safely. Please handle the resin carefully to avoid accidental damage.
The model arrived slightly warped or bent. What can I do?
Mild warping can sometimes be gently corrected by carefully warming the affected area in warm (not boiling) water, then easing it back into shape and allowing it to cool. Always test on a small area first and handle with care to avoid snapping delicate parts.
There are small surface marks where supports were removed. Is this normal?
Yes, very fine marks can remain where supports were attached, even after cleanup. These usually disappear with a little light sanding and a good primer coat before painting.
My primer or paint is not sticking well. Any tips?
Before priming, wash the parts gently in warm water with a drop of mild detergent, then rinse and let them dry completely. Use a primer suitable for resin miniatures and apply in thin, even coats to improve adhesion.
What glue should I use if there are separate parts?
For resin parts, a good quality cyanoacrylate (super glue) works well. Make sure the contact surfaces are clean and dry, and hold them together until the bond sets.
How should I prepare the models before painting?
Follow these steps for best results:
- Inspect the models and remove any tiny leftover nubs from supports.
- Lightly sand any visible support marks or rough spots.
- Wash the parts in warm, soapy water, rinse and let them dry fully.
- Attach to a temporary base or holder for easier handling while painting.
What type of primer works best on these resin models?
Use a primer specifically designed for miniatures or resin models, either brush-on or spray. Apply thin coats to preserve the fine detail on the memorials.
Can I use acrylic paints on these models?
Yes, acrylic paints work very well on primed resin. They are easy to thin, layer and clean up, making them ideal for painting fine details on the figures and plinths.
Any tips for painting the Hugh Dowding memorial realistically?
Many modellers aim for a stone or bronze effect. You can:
- Start with a dark base coat.
- Use drybrushing or gentle layering to pick out raised details.
- Add subtle washes to deepen shadows and bring out the sculpting.
Should I seal the paint once I am finished?
Sealing is recommended. A clear matte or satin varnish will help protect your paintwork from handling and dust, and is especially useful if the models will be used regularly on a layout or diorama.
