FAQ – GN15 Lister Diesel Loco Body Kit

1. What chassis does this kit fit?

This kit is designed to clip directly onto the Hornby “Smokey Joe” 0-4-0 chassis. Just remove the piston rods before fitting. The chassis is not included.

2. Is the model supplied painted or assembled?

No. The kit is supplied unpainted and unassembled so you can customise it to match your own layout style, colours, and weathering.

3. What tools or glue do I need?

Superglue (cyanoacrylate) is recommended. Small files, fine sandpaper, and a hobby knife are helpful for cleaning up parts before assembly.

4. Will the finished locomotive run on OO gauge track?

Yes. GN15 uses OO/HO gauge (16.5 mm track), so the loco will run on any standard 00 layout. Only the body is GN15 scale (1:22.5).

5. How fragile is the resin?

The resin offers high detail but must be handled carefully during assembly. Once built and mounted on the Smokey Joe chassis, the model is sturdy for layout use.

6. What paints should I use?

Acrylics work best. Prime the parts first with a plastic-friendly primer, then apply colour and weathering as desired.

Troubleshooting

7. The chassis won’t clip into the frame — what should I check?

Make sure the Smokey Joe piston rods have been fully removed. Also check for small resin tabs inside the frame and lightly file them if needed.

8. The body is not sitting level — how do I correct it?

Dry-fit the body and identify where it catches. A small amount of sanding on the underside edges usually ensures a perfect, level fit.

9. One of the resin parts looks slightly warped — what now?

Warm the part gently with a hair dryer and reshape it slowly. Hold it in place while it cools so it sets correctly.

10. My primer isn’t sticking — how do I fix this?

Wash all parts in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let them dry fully. Resin sometimes has light residue that can prevent primer adhesion.

11. The driver figure doesn’t fit inside the cab — what should I adjust?

Dry-fit the dashboard and seat first. If space is tight, lightly sand the underside of the figure or adjust the seat height before gluing.

Assembly & Painting Micro Guide

12. Should I assemble the entire kit before painting?

Assemble the main body and chassis first, but leave small parts like horns, filler lids, and the driver figure off until after painting for easier access.

13. What is the best priming method for resin?

Use a high-quality acrylic or miniatures primer. Grey or white primer works best for industrial colour schemes.

14. What assembly order is recommended?

Suggested sequence:

  • Chassis frame
  • Body shell
  • Engine cover & filler
  • Dashboard & seat
  • Accessories & horns
  • Driver figure

15. How can I achieve a realistic industrial weathered look?

Use dry-brushing for metal edges, acrylic washes for grime, and weathering powders around vents, doors, and footplates.

16. Can I varnish the model to protect the paint?

Yes. A matt or satin varnish works well. Allow all paint layers to fully dry before applying the final protective coat.
