FAQ – Product FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions – O-16.5 / NG7 Flat Bed Wagon

What scale is this flat bed wagon designed for?

This wagon is designed for O-16.5 / NG7 narrow gauge layouts, making it ideal for narrow gauge enthusiasts who want unique rolling stock in this scale.

What exactly is included in the box?

You receive one flat bed wagon with chassis and two fitted wheelsets/axles. Depending on the option you choose at purchase, it is supplied either with or without NEM-style couplers.

What are the dimensions of the wagon?

The wagon measures approximately 63 mm in length, 45 mm in width, and 16 mm in height, making it a compact and versatile flat bed for a variety of narrow gauge layouts.

What material is the wagon made from?

The wagon is 3D printed in PLA bio-plastic. This material is hobby-friendly, easy to work with, and suitable for painting and light finishing work such as sanding.

Is the wagon ready to run straight from the box?

Yes, it is supplied with free-running polyacetal (POM) wheelsets for smooth operation and a pre-coloured wood-effect deck with a black underframe. You can run it as supplied or further customise it with paint and weathering.

Does the wagon come assembled or as a kit?

The wagon is supplied unassembled and unpainted, with the main parts already 3D printed. Some minor finishing, such as light sanding and fitting couplers, may be required before use or painting.

What type of wheels are included?

The wagon comes with two fitted polyacetal (POM) wheelsets. These are free-running and designed to give smooth, reliable operation on suitable track.

Can I add my own couplings?

Yes. The wagon is designed for easy fitment of your own couplings, or you can choose an option that includes close-coupler style fittings. This lets you match the wagon to your existing stock.

Is there space to add weight to the wagon?

Yes, there is ample room on the chassis to add stick-on weights if you wish to increase the wagon’s running stability or tailor it to your layout’s operating conditions.

Is this wagon compatible with other items in your range?

Yes. It is part of the EZ-PZ range, designed to complement other matching locos and wagons available separately in the same style and scale.

Is the packaging environmentally friendly?

Yes, the wagon is supplied in eco-friendly packaging made from recycled materials that is fully recyclable, in keeping with the PLA bio-plastic construction of the model itself.

My wagon doesn’t roll smoothly. What should I check first?

First, ensure the wheelsets are fully seated in their axle slots and that nothing is fouling the wheels. Check that the wagon sits level and that there is no flash or roughness on the axle points. A tiny amount of careful cleaning or very light reaming of the axle holes can often improve running.

The wheels seem tight or stiff. How can I improve free running?

Inspect the axle ends for tiny burrs and gently remove any excess material with fine abrasive paper if needed. Also check the inside of the axle boxes for stray printing residue. Avoid oiling PLA heavily; if lubrication is needed, use a very small amount of plastic-safe lubricant on the axle points only.

The wagon derails on my layout. What could be causing this?

Common causes include uneven track, tight curves, or points with raised check rails. Check that both wheelsets are fully in gauge for your track, and that the wagon is not twisted. Adding a little stick-on weight centrally over the axles can also improve tracking.

The surface looks slightly rough in places. Is this normal?

A light surface texture is normal with 3D printed PLA. Any visible layer lines or small imperfections can usually be removed with gentle sanding using fine-grit abrasive paper before painting. Take care not to over-sand details.

My couplers don’t line up with my existing stock. What can I do?

Check the mounting height and shank length of your chosen couplers. You may need to adjust the mounting position slightly or add a thin packing piece under the coupler box to match your existing stock. Always test-couple to a known-good vehicle before finalising the installation.

Do I need to do any preparation before painting?

Yes, for best results lightly sand any rough areas, then remove dust with a soft brush or lint-free cloth. A gentle wash in warm soapy water followed by thorough drying can help paint adhere better, especially on PLA surfaces.

What paints are suitable for this wagon?

The PLA body can be painted with both acrylic and enamel paints. Many modellers prefer acrylics for quick drying and easy clean-up, while enamels can give a very durable finish. Always apply in thin coats and allow adequate drying time between layers.

Do I need to use a primer on the PLA surface?

While not strictly essential, a plastic-compatible primer is recommended for the best adhesion and a smoother finish, especially if you plan to apply light colours, heavy weathering, or masking for multi-tone schemes.

Can I glue extra details or loads to the wagon?

Yes. PLA can be glued using cyanoacrylate (superglue). This works well for attaching extra detail parts, securing loads, or fixing any small add-ons you wish to add to the flat bed.

How can I achieve a realistic weathered look on the wood deck and chassis?

Start with a base coat that suits your chosen railway style, then build up weathering with washes, dry-brushing, and powders. For the wood deck, use varied tones to represent planking and wear; for the black underframe, add rust, dust, and oil stains in thin, controlled layers to avoid obscuring detail.
