FAQ – Resin Dustbin Set for Model Railway Layouts
What exactly is included in my order?
You receive four dustbins and four separate removable lids, making a total of eight unpainted grey resin pieces. Each bin measures approximately 21mm in diameter and 30mm high. Any painted examples or figures shown in photos are for reference only and are not included.
What scale are these dustbins suitable for?
The bins are sized at roughly 21mm x 30mm, making them ideal for many common model railway yard, workshop, or locomotive depot scenes. Modellers often use them where a small industrial or depot dustbin would look at home; please check the measurements against your chosen scale to be sure they suit your layout.
Do the lids really come off the bins?
Yes. Each dustbin has a separate removable lid so you can display them closed, open, or even filled with your own “rubbish” such as small offcuts, ballast, or other scenic materials.
Are the pieces ready to use straight out of the box?
They arrive cleaned, cured, and with supports removed, but they are supplied unprimed and unpainted. They are ready for you to prime, paint, and weather to match your layout. Some very light sanding may be needed to remove the last traces of support marks.
Are the dustbins supplied painted like in the photos?
No. The product is supplied as unpainted grey resin. Any painted bins and the figure shown in photos are for illustration only, to give you an idea of how they can look once finished.
Is the figure in the photos included?
No. The figure shown “working out bin day” is not included with this set and is available separately if you wish to add it to your scene.
My dustbin arrived with a small defect or mark – is that normal?
All items are cleaned and cured by hand, and we do our very best to remove support marks. Very fine marks or tiny imperfections can occasionally remain and are usually easily dealt with by a light sanding before priming. This is normal for hand-finished resin pieces.
What should I do if an item arrives broken in the post?
If your dustbins arrive damaged from shipping, please take clear photos of the damage and contact us. While we cannot be responsible for breakages after delivery, we will always look at postal damage and see what we can do to help.
Can I use these dustbins outdoors or in a garden railway?
The pieces are resin and designed primarily for indoor layouts. If you plan to use them outdoors, make sure they are well primed and painted, and protected from excessive handling or impact, as resin can be delicate.
Are the lids and bins glued together or separate?
They are supplied as separate pieces. This lets you choose whether to leave them loose and removable, or glue them in place once you have decided on your scene.
How fragile are these resin parts?
Resin can be quite delicate, especially around thinner edges and details. Try to avoid dropping or crushing the parts, and handle them gently during assembly and painting to prevent accidental breakage.
Can I sand or file the resin to adjust the fit?
Yes. Light sanding is absolutely fine and often helpful to tidy up any remaining support marks or to adjust the fit of lids. Use fine-grit sandpaper and take it slowly to avoid removing too much material.
What should I do if a bin or lid snaps while I’m handling it?
If a part breaks after it has arrived safely, you can usually repair it with a good quality cyanoacrylate (super glue). Hold the pieces together firmly until the bond sets, then gently sand and repaint if needed. Unfortunately, we can’t take responsibility for breakages that occur after delivery.
The lid doesn’t sit quite right on one of my bins – how can I fix this?
First, check for any small resin nibs or rough spots and carefully sand them away. You can also:
- Very lightly sand the top rim of the bin or the underside of the lid.
- Test fit frequently to avoid taking off too much material.
- Once you’re happy with the fit, you can leave the lid removable or glue it in place.
My parts look slightly shiny or smooth – will paint stick to them?
Yes, paint will adhere well once they are properly primed. If you’re concerned, you can very lightly scuff the surface with fine sandpaper or a gentle abrasive pad, then wash off any dust before priming.
Do I need to wash the parts before priming?
They are supplied cleaned and cured, but a quick wash in mild soapy water, followed by a thorough rinse and air-dry, can help remove any remaining dust or handling residue and give your primer the best surface to grip.
What type of primer works best on these bins?
Any good quality model primer suitable for resin will work well. Many modellers use:
- Aerosol hobby primers for quick coverage.
- Brush-on acrylic primers for more control.
Choose a neutral colour (grey is ideal) to help your final colours show accurately.
Can I use acrylic paints on these dustbins?
Yes. Acrylic paints work very well on primed resin, as do most hobby enamels. The key is to prime first, then apply thin, even coats of paint to preserve the detail.
How can I make the bins look used and realistic?
After base-coating, you can add simple weathering effects:
- Dry-brushing lighter shades to pick out edges and texture.
- Applying thin washes of darker colours to suggest grime.
- Adding small rust streaks or scuffs around rims and handles.
- Filling open bins with offcuts, ballast, or other “rubbish” from your scenic materials.
Should I glue the bins to my layout?
It’s optional, but many modellers do glue them down once they’re happy with the placement. A small dab of suitable adhesive on the base will keep them secure, especially in busy yard or depot scenes where they might be knocked during operation or cleaning.
