GN15 Diesel Critter Kit – Frequently Asked Questions

What scale is this kit, and what track does it run on?

This kit is designed for GN15 scale, which is 1:22.5 running on standard 16.5 mm gauge track. It represents a narrow-gauge industrial locomotive in G-scale proportions, ideal for workshops, quarries, and factory scenes.

Does the kit include a motorised chassis?

No, the kit does not include a motorised chassis. It is designed to fit a Tenshodo Spud or Hanazono chassis, and the chassis shown in any photos is for reference only. You will need to supply your own compatible chassis.

Which chassis will fit this body?

The kit is compatible with Tenshodo Spud and Hanazono chassis with a 31 mm wheelbase and 10.5 mm wheels recommended. The resin chassis piece in the kit is designed to accept these units.

What exactly comes in the box?

You receive ten grey resin-printed parts: chassis (for Tenshodo Spud / Hanazono), Diesel Critter body, instrument panel, control handle, brake column, exhaust stack, radiator cap, seat, and two coupling blocks. All parts are supplied unpainted and unassembled.

Is this kit suitable for beginners?

Yes, provided you are comfortable with basic model assembly. The parts are designed for simple assembly with superglue and do not require special tools, though some minor sanding and careful handling of the resin are recommended.

How is the kit packaged and shipped?

The kit is supplied new, unpainted, and unassembled in eco-friendly packaging with a recyclable outer box and 99% recycled, acid-free inner pulp. Orders are dispatched via Royal Mail within the UK.

How do I add weight to improve traction?

The chassis includes pockets and a tray specifically intended for adding weight. You can use lead shot or commercial products such as Liquid Gravity in these pockets to improve traction. Secure the weight with a suitable adhesive, taking care not to obstruct the chassis or wheel movement.

Can I run this on a standard OO/HO layout?

It will run on 16.5 mm gauge track, the same gauge used for OO/HO, but the locomotive is GN15 scale (1:22.5), so it will look much larger than standard OO/HO stock. It is intended for GN15 narrow-gauge layouts rather than conventional OO/HO scenes.

Is the resin safe to handle?

The parts are cleaned and UV-cured by hand before packing, so they are ready to handle and work with. As with all resin models, avoid creating excessive dust when sanding and wash your hands after long sessions of handling or sanding.

Can I modify or kitbash this critter?

Yes, the compact industrial design lends itself well to kitbashing and detailing. You can add extra fittings, weathering, or figures to suit your layout theme, bearing in mind that the resin is fragile and should be drilled and cut carefully.

What glue should I use for assembly?

Use a good quality cyanoacrylate (superglue) for all resin-to-resin joints. Apply sparingly, dry-fit parts before gluing, and allow each joint to set fully before handling the model.

What type of primer and paint should I use?

Use a suitable primer such as automotive or model primer formulated for plastics or resin. After priming, you can finish the model with acrylic or enamel paints. Allow the primer to cure fully before applying colour coats.

How should I prepare the parts before painting?

Inspect the parts and lightly sand any visible support marks or small imperfections. A fine sanding stick or fine-grit paper works well. Once sanded, gently dust off or wash the parts and let them dry completely before priming.

Do I need to wash the parts before painting?

The parts are cleaned and UV-cured by hand, so they arrive ready to work with. Some modellers still prefer to give resin parts a quick wash in mild soapy water and let them dry to ensure the best possible paint adhesion.

How fragile are the resin parts during assembly?

Resin is inherently more fragile than styrene, so treat the parts with care. Avoid bending thin details such as the exhaust stack, control handle, brake column, and coupling blocks. When sanding or test-fitting, support the piece close to the area you are working on.

Any tips for painting an industrial look?

After priming, build up colour in thin coats. For an industrial feel, consider muted greens, greys, or industrial reds, followed by dry-brushing, washes, and rust or oil streaks. Focus weathering around the exhaust stack, radiator cap, footplate, and coupling blocks.

My chassis does not seem to fit the body correctly. What should I check?

First confirm that your chassis is a Tenshodo Spud or Hanazono with a 31 mm wheelbase and 10.5 mm wheels. Check for any small bits of resin or flash inside the chassis pockets and tray and carefully remove them. Dry-fit the chassis and adjust very lightly with fine files if necessary, taking care not to remove too much material.

The body is sitting crooked on the chassis. How can I fix this?

Ensure that all contact surfaces are clean and flat. Check that no weight or wiring is fouling the inside of the body shell. Lightly sand any high spots on the chassis top or inside the body, test-fitting frequently until the body sits level.

The parts are not bonding well with superglue. What can I do?

Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and free from dust or grease. Lightly roughen the contact areas with fine sandpaper to give the glue some β€œtooth.” Use fresh superglue and hold the joint firmly until it grabs. Gel-type cyanoacrylate can help on slightly uneven surfaces.

There are visible support marks on the surface. How should I remove them?

Use fine sanding sticks or fine-grit sandpaper to gently smooth the support marks. Work slowly and evenly, especially on visible faces like the bonnet and cab area. Avoid aggressive sanding that could soften sharp detail.

My kit arrived damaged. What should I do?

If any parts arrive damaged in transit, take clear photos of the damage and the packaging and contact the seller. They have requested that customers send photos and will do their best to help resolve the issue.
