FAQ – Product FAQs

OO9 Maintenance Car Kit – Frequently Asked Questions

What scale is this maintenance car kit designed for?

This kit is designed for OO9 scale, which is 4mm to 1ft running on 9mm gauge track. It’s ideal for narrow gauge layouts and works well alongside other OO9 rolling stock and scenic items.

Which chassis does this kit fit?

The body and sub-chassis are designed specifically to fit the KATO 11-109 chassis with coreless motor. The KATO chassis is not included and is shown only for reference in any images.

What is included in the kit?

The kit includes a maintenance car body, a sub-chassis, and a detailed rear load area with a hydraulic jib, oil drum, trenching bucket, and storage box. All parts are supplied unpainted and unassembled.

Is the KATO 11-109 chassis included with the kit?

No, the KATO 11-109 chassis is not included. You will need to supply your own chassis for the model to run. The kit is designed to drop-fit onto that specific chassis.

How are the parts manufactured?

All parts are high-detail resin prints made in the UK. Each piece is cleaned and UV-cured by hand to bring out crisp surface detail ready for priming and painting.

Is this kit suitable for beginners?

The kit is relatively straightforward to assemble thanks to the drop-fit body and sub-chassis, but it is still a resin kit. Some modelling experience, especially with superglue and small parts, will be helpful.

How does the body attach to the KATO chassis?

The kit uses a sub-chassis that clips securely onto the KATO 11-109 chassis. The main body then drops onto this sub-chassis, making it easy to paint the body and load area separately before final assembly.

Can I use this kit on layouts other than OO9?

The kit is designed specifically for OO9 scale on 9mm track and to fit the KATO 11-109 chassis. While you might adapt it for other uses, it will look and fit best in an OO9 narrow gauge setting.

Is the rear load area removable?

The rear load area is supplied as part of the kit and is intended to be assembled onto the main body. You can choose whether to glue it permanently or keep it as a push-fit if you prefer flexibility, but it is not designed as a clip-on accessory.

Is this model motorised?

The resin kit itself is not motorised. It is a body and detail set designed to fit over a separately purchased KATO 11-109 powered chassis, which provides the motor and running gear.

What should I do if the body doesn’t seem to fit the KATO 11-109 chassis?

First, check that your chassis is definitely a KATO 11-109 with the coreless motor. Make sure there are no sprues, support nubs, or bits of flash on the resin or the chassis. A light clean-up with a fine file or sanding stick on any tight spots usually solves fit issues. Do not force the parts together, as resin is fragile.

The resin parts arrived slightly warped. How can I fix this?

Mild warping can often be corrected by gently warming the part in hand-hot (not boiling) water, carefully bending it back into shape, and holding it in position under cold water until it sets. Always take it slowly and avoid over-bending, as resin can snap if stressed.

Some small details have broken in transit. What should I do?

If you find any damage on arrival, please take clear photos of the parts and the packaging and get in touch. We’ll do our best to help and advise on repair or replacement options. Small breaks can often be repaired with a tiny amount of superglue.

My superglue isn’t bonding well to the resin. Any tips?

Ensure the parts are clean and free from dust or skin oils. Lightly scuff the glue surfaces with fine sandpaper, then use a fresh, good-quality cyanoacrylate (superglue). Hold the parts together firmly for the recommended curing time. Avoid using plastic cement, as it does not work on resin.

The model rocks or sits unevenly on the track. How can I correct this?

Check that the KATO chassis sits fully home in the sub-chassis and that there is no resin flash or debris preventing a level fit. Make sure the sub-chassis is properly aligned with the body. A small amount of careful sanding on any high spots on the sub-chassis can help the chassis sit flat.

Do I need to wash the resin parts before painting?

The parts are cleaned and UV-cured by hand, but it’s still good practice to give them a quick wash in warm water with a drop of mild detergent, then rinse and allow them to dry fully. This helps ensure the primer adheres as well as possible.

What primer should I use on the resin?

Use a good-quality car or modelling primer suitable for plastics and resin. Light, misted coats are better than one heavy coat. Once primed, you can paint with either acrylic or enamel paints as you prefer.

Which paints work best on this kit?

The resin takes both acrylic and enamel paints well once primed. Acrylics are ideal for quick drying and easy clean-up, while enamels give a hard-wearing finish. Choose whichever matches the rest of your rolling stock and weathering products.

Do I need to sand the parts before painting?

Minor sanding or finishing may be required, especially on any support marks or mould lines. Use fine-grit sanding sticks or papers and take care not to remove surface detail. After sanding, wipe away dust before priming.

Any tips for painting the maintenance details like the hydraulic jib and tools?

It often helps to paint the hydraulic jib, oil drum, trenching bucket, and storage box separately before final assembly. Mount the small parts on cocktail sticks or clips for easier handling, then add weathering such as rust, oil stains, and dirt to bring the maintenance scene to life.

How should I handle and store the resin parts?

Resin is fragile, so handle parts by the thicker sections where possible and avoid putting pressure on fine details like the jib and edges of the load area. Store unassembled parts in a padded box or tray so they don’t knock against each other or heavier items.
