FAQ – Product FAQs

What exactly is this figure?

This is an unpainted, 3D scanned figure of a man giving a thumbs up, suitable as a driver or workyard operator. The pose and proportions come from a real person, giving a very realistic look on your layout.

What scale and size is the figure?

The figure is approximately 89 mm tall and is in 16 mm scale (1:19), ideal for garden railway use such as 16 mm, SM32 and similar scales.

What material is the figure made from?

The figure is printed in the UK using high detail resin. This gives crisp detail, but also means the model should be handled with care as resin can be delicate.

Is the figure painted or ready-to-run?

The figure is supplied unpainted. It is cleaned and cured by hand, but may need some minor finishing before you apply primer and paint.

How is the figure packaged and shipped?

The figure is dispatched by Royal Mail 2nd Class. Packaging is eco friendly: the outer packaging is made in part from recycled materials and is fully recyclable, and the interior packing materials are acid free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

Is this figure suitable for children?

No. These items are not toys and are not suitable for minors. They contain small parts and can be a choking hazard, so they are intended for adult hobbyists and collectors only.

What primer should I use on this resin figure?

The figure can be primed with Simonez grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. Apply in light coats to preserve the fine detail captured by the 3D scan and resin print.

Do I need to do any preparation before priming?

All items are cleaned and cured by hand, but some minor finishing may be needed. This can include gently removing any small print marks or smoothing tiny imperfections before you apply primer.

Can I use other brands of paint after priming?

Yes. Once you have primed the figure with a suitable primer such as Simonez grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, you can use your preferred model paints on top, following the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I use this figure outdoors on a garden railway?

The figure is in 16 mm scale and is ideal for garden railway and SM32 use. As with any resin model, if used outdoors it is best to ensure it is well primed and painted, and not left where it can be easily knocked or dropped.

Is the pose fixed, or can I reposition the arms?

The pose is fixed. The figure is 3D scanned from a real person and printed as a single resin piece of a man giving a thumbs up, intended as a driver or workyard operator.

Who is the design licensed from?

The figure is sold under commercial license from Design Scan Print 3D, ensuring the original scan and design are used legitimately.

The figure arrived with a broken part. What should I do?

If the figure appears to have been damaged in the post, please take clear photos of the damage and the packaging and get in touch. While we cannot be responsible for breakages after safe delivery, we will see what we can do to help make things good when damage occurs during shipping.

My figure looks slightly rough in a few places. Is this normal?

Because each item is cleaned and cured by hand, a small amount of minor finishing may be needed. Lightly smoothing any tiny imperfections before priming is normal for resin figures and helps you achieve the best painted result.

The resin feels delicate. How should I handle it?

Resin can be quite delicate, especially around thinner areas. Try to handle the figure by the more solid parts, avoid flexing limbs or fine details, and take care not to drop it. We cannot be held responsible for breakages once your item has arrived safely.

The primer is not sticking well. What can I check?

First, make sure the figure is free from dust and skin oils. You can gently wipe it with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and let it dry fully. Then apply Simonez grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer in thin coats. Heavy coats can cause runs and poor adhesion.

The figure seems slightly warped. Can this be fixed?

Minor warping can sometimes occur with resin. If you notice any issues on arrival, please photograph the figure and contact us before attempting any repairs, so we can advise on the best way forward.

What safety precautions should I take when sanding or finishing?

When doing any minor finishing on resin, it is sensible to work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing in dust. Wet-sanding small areas and wiping away residue helps keep dust down and protects both your health and the fine detail.

How should I clean the figure before painting?

The figures are already cleaned and cured by hand, but before painting you can:

  • Gently dust the figure with a soft brush.
  • Optionally wipe with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
  • Allow it to dry completely before applying primer.

Do I need to remove any supports or sprues?

Figures are supplied cleaned and cured, so you should not normally need to remove large supports. If you notice any small remnants, they can usually be trimmed carefully as part of the minor finishing process before priming.

What order should I follow for assembly and painting?

This figure is supplied as a single piece, so no assembly is required. A typical workflow is:

  • Inspect the figure for any small imperfections.
  • Do any minor finishing needed.
  • Prime with Simonez grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer.
  • Apply your chosen paints once the primer has fully dried.

How can I get the most realistic finish from the 3D scanned detail?

Use a fine primer such as Tamiya Fine Surface Primer to preserve the scanned detail, work with thin paint layers, and avoid heavy brush strokes. Picking out facial features, clothing folds and the thumbs up gesture with careful shading really shows off the realism of the scan.

Can I glue this figure into my cab or yard scene?

Yes. Once painted and fully dry, you can fix the figure in place using a suitable model adhesive for resin. Apply a small amount to the feet or contact points so you do not obscure the detail.
