Frequently Asked Questions – Minffordd-Style Small Station Building
What is this station building based on?
This model takes its design influence from the station building at Minffordd on the Ffestiniog Railway. It’s not an exact scale copy, but a close, recognisable representation that captures the character of the real structure.
What are the dimensions of the model?
The building has a footprint of approximately 59mm x 54mm and is about 50mm tall. This compact size makes it ideal for smaller layouts or where space is at a premium.
What type of layouts is this building suitable for?
It works well as a small station building on a branch line, a minor stop, or as a standalone halt. Its modest footprint allows it to fit into a wide range of scenic settings, from rural to semi-urban scenes.
Does the model come painted?
No, the model is supplied unpainted and ready to paint. This lets you choose colours and weathering to suit your own layout and era.
Is the model supplied from stock or made to order?
The model is shipped from stock, so there’s no waiting for it to be printed or cast. It’s ready to dispatch and ready for you to paint as soon as it arrives.
Is this suitable for beginners to scenic modelling?
Yes. The building is straightforward to work with and is a good project for anyone comfortable using basic sprays and acrylic paints. It’s a nice step up from pre-painted buildings without being too demanding.
The model arrived with a slight warp or twist. What can I do?
If there is a gentle warp, you can usually correct it by carefully warming the part (for example, in warm—not boiling—water) and gently holding it flat while it cools. Always test on a small area first and avoid excessive heat, which can damage the model.
Some edges look a bit rough. How should I tidy them up?
Lightly sand any rough edges or faint print lines with fine wet-and-dry paper or a fine sanding stick. Work slowly and check your progress often so you don’t remove surface detail.
My paint isn’t sticking well. What might be wrong?
Paint adhesion problems usually come from surface contamination. Before priming, wash the model gently in warm water with a drop of mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Then apply a light coat of car primer before using acrylics.
The primer is obscuring some detail. How can I avoid this?
Apply primer in several light mist coats rather than one heavy coat, keeping the spray can moving and about the recommended distance from the model. If detail has already been obscured, allow the primer to dry fully, then gently smooth the area with fine abrasive and re-prime lightly.
Parts don’t seem to sit flat on my baseboard. How can I fix this?
Check your baseboard or platform surface for flatness first. If the underside of the building is slightly uneven, you can carefully sand it on a flat sheet of fine sandpaper. Small gaps can be filled with a thin layer of PVA or modelling filler before fixing the building in place.
Do I need to assemble anything, or is it one piece?
The product description indicates it is supplied as a ready building, shipped from stock and ready to paint. There is no separate assembly mentioned, so you should receive it essentially as a single piece, needing only painting and installation on your layout.
How should I prepare the model before painting?
Before painting, follow these steps:
- Gently wash the model in warm water with a small amount of mild detergent.
- Use a soft brush to remove any dust or residue from crevices.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely.
- Inspect for any small imperfections and sand them lightly if needed.
What kind of primer should I use?
Normal automotive (car) primer from an aerosol can works very well. Choose a fine-surface or plastic-compatible primer and apply it in thin coats. Grey primer is a good all-round choice for most colour schemes.
What paints work best on this building?
Acrylic paints are recommended. They are easy to work with, dry quickly, and are well suited to brush painting or airbrushing over car primer. Use thin coats and build up your colours gradually for a smooth finish.
Any tips for painting it to look realistic?
For a more realistic finish:
- Use slightly muted, “earthy” tones rather than very bright colours.
- Pick out doors, windows, and trim in contrasting but harmonious shades.
- Add gentle weathering with thin washes, dry-brushing, or powders to suggest age and use.
- Study photos of the Minffordd building or similar small stations for colour ideas.
Should I seal the paint once I’ve finished?
While not essential, a light coat of clear matt or satin varnish over fully dried acrylic paint can help protect the finish from handling and dust. Apply in light coats to avoid softening the underlying paint.
