G-Scale 17 Gallon Milk Churns – FAQ
What exactly do I get in this set?
You receive eight G-scale / 1:22 GN15 17-gallon milk churns. They are supplied as resin printed pieces in grey, unprimed and unpainted, with all supports removed and ready for you to prime and paint.
What size are the milk churns?
The churns are based on real 17-gallon churns that were 36" high by 20" diameter. In G-scale this works out at approximately 41 mm high by 22.5 mm diameter for each churn.
What scale are these suitable for?
These churns are designed for G-scale layouts and are also suitable for 1:22 GN15. They work well as wagon loads, platform clutter, or general loading-area details on layouts and dioramas in those scales.
What material are the churns made from?
The churns are resin printed. Each piece is cleaned and cured by hand before being packed, so they are ready for finishing when they arrive.
Do the churns come painted or assembled?
All pieces come unprimed and unpainted. Any parts that need it are supplied unassembled. The painted churns shown in photos are only examples of how they can look when finished (car primer and then silver acrylic spray were used).
Is the figure in the photos included?
No. Any figure shown is for scale reference only and is available separately. This listing is just for the eight resin milk churns.
What kind of detail do these churns have?
Each churn includes the weld line on the main body, detailed lid with maker’s plate, an owner plate on the front, and finely detailed handles. They are designed to look like the kind of churns you would find full or empty around platforms and loading areas.
Are these suitable for outdoor garden railways?
The churns are G-scale resin prints, which many modellers do use outdoors, but resin can be delicate. If you plan to use them outside, it helps to:
- Prime and paint them thoroughly to protect the surface.
- Avoid placing them where they might be frequently knocked or dropped.
They are ideal as scenic details rather than robust play items.
Can I glue the churns down on my layout?
Yes. You can fix them in place using a small amount of suitable model adhesive for resin. Many modellers secure them on wagon floors or platforms so they do not move during operation or handling.
Are these safe for children to play with?
These are detailed resin scenic items intended for hobby use, not toys. Resin can be delicate and may break if dropped or handled roughly, so they are best kept for older hobbyists and display rather than children’s play.
How are the churns finished before shipping?
Each churn is cleaned and cured by hand after printing. All supports are removed and we do our best to eliminate support marks. They are then supplied to you ready for priming and painting.
Will there be visible layer lines or support marks?
We work hard to minimise support marks, but due to the nature of resin printing, some fine marks may remain. A little light sanding is sometimes needed before priming to get the smoothest finish.
What should I do if a churn arrives broken?
If any churn is damaged in the post, please take clear photos of the damage and contact us. We cannot be responsible for breakages after safe delivery, but if it arrives broken we will see what we can do to help.
What if a handle or small detail snaps later on?
Resin is quite delicate, so small parts can break if dropped or knocked. Once the item has arrived safely we cannot take responsibility for accidental damage, but minor breaks can often be repaired with a tiny amount of suitable model glue and careful handling.
My churns look slightly different from each other. Is that normal?
Because each piece is printed, cleaned and cured by hand, very small variations can occur. These are usually minimal and often add to the realistic, individual look of scattered platform clutter.
There are faint marks where supports were. How can I fix this?
Faint support marks can be smoothed with gentle sanding. Use fine-grit abrasive (for example, a fine sanding stick or finishing paper) and work slowly, checking the detail as you go so you do not lose the crisp plates and handles.
How should I prepare the churns before painting?
They are supplied cleaned and cured, but before painting you can:
- Lightly sand any visible support marks.
- Wipe the surface with a soft cloth to remove dust.
- Apply a suitable primer to give your paint a good key.
What primer and paint were used on the example churns?
The example churns shown were finished with car primer followed by a silver acrylic spray. This is just one approach; you can use your preferred paints as long as they are suitable for use on primed resin.
Do I need to assemble anything on these churns?
The churns themselves are supplied as finished pieces. If any item in an order requires assembly it will be supplied unassembled, but the milk churns are designed to be ready to prime and paint straight from the pack after any light sanding you choose to do.
How can I achieve a realistic “used” look on the churns?
A simple method is:
- Prime the churns.
- Spray or brush on a metal colour such as silver.
- Add thin washes of brown or dark grey to suggest dirt and age.
- Lightly dry-brush a lighter metal tone on edges to pick out the detail.
Can I repaint them if I am not happy with my first attempt?
Yes. If you are not satisfied with your first paint job, you can carefully strip or sand back the paint depending on the products used, then re-prime and repaint. Always test your stripping method on a small area first to make sure it does not damage the resin.
