FAQ – Product FAQs

What scale is this Wickham Type 42 Inspection Car designed for?

This Wickham Type 42 Inspection Car is designed for O-16.5 / NG7 narrow gauge layouts. It’s ideal for narrow gauge enthusiasts who want something a bit different to run on 16.5mm track in larger scales.

Does this model include a motor or Smokey Joe chassis?

No, the Smokey Joe chassis is not included. The product consists of the Wickham body, a sub-chassis that clips onto a Smokey Joe chassis, headlamps, glazing, and brass wire for handrails. Any powered chassis shown in images is for reference only.

What are the overall dimensions of the finished model?

The finished Wickham body on its sub-chassis measures approximately 92mm in length, 58mm in width, and 57mm in height, making it a compact but eye-catching inspection car for your layout.

What material is the model made from?

The parts are 3D printed in bio-plastic (PLA). This material is lightweight, easy to work with, and can be glued with superglue and painted with acrylic or enamel paints.

Is the model pre-coloured or do I need to paint it?

The parts are supplied pre-coloured, including a coloured exhaust, so you can run it as-is if you like. However, it is fully paintable, so you can apply your own colour scheme or weathering to match your layout.

What exactly is included in the kit?

The kit includes:

  • Wickham Type 42 body
  • Sub-chassis to clip onto a Smokey Joe chassis
  • 4 x separate headlamps
  • Laser-cut glazing for front, rear, and side windows
  • Brass wire for handrails

Do I need to assemble the model, or is it ready to run?

The Wickham is supplied unassembled and unpainted. You will need to assemble the body, fit the glazing, handrails, and headlamps, and mount it onto a modified Smokey Joe chassis. Some minor finishing, such as light sanding, may be required.

Is any special packaging used for this kit?

Yes, the kit is supplied in eco-friendly packaging made from recycled materials, and the packaging itself is fully recyclable.

Can I run this model on a standard OO/HO layout?

The model is designed for O-16.5 / NG7 narrow gauge, which uses 16.5mm track but represents a larger scale than OO/HO. Physically, it will run on 16.5mm track if built on a compatible Smokey Joe chassis, but visually it is intended for narrow gauge scenes rather than standard OO/HO stock.

Do you ship this product internationally?

Yes, worldwide shipping is available, so you can add this Wickham inspection car to your layout wherever you are based.

What should I do if the body doesn’t clip securely onto the Smokey Joe sub-chassis?

First, check that any moulding pips or printing remnants on the clip areas have been lightly sanded flat. Make sure the sub-chassis is fully seated on the Smokey Joe chassis and that the ends of the chassis have been trimmed back as required. If the fit is still loose, a tiny spot of superglue on the clip points can help, but test-fit carefully before gluing.

The Wickham body seems to foul on the wheels or motion – how can I fix this?

Confirm that you have cut off each end of the Smokey Joe chassis as required by the instructions. Any remaining plastic from the original body mounts can catch on the Wickham sub-chassis. Gently file or sand any high spots on the chassis or inside the Wickham body until the wheels turn freely.

My glazing doesn’t sit flat in the window openings. What can I do?

Check that the window apertures are free from burrs or stray printing lines; a light pass with a fine file or sanding stick usually helps. Dry-fit each laser-cut glazing piece first, then fix with a product such as Glue ‘n’ Glaze or another clear-drying adhesive, applying very small amounts to avoid squeeze-out onto the visible area.

The brass wire handrails are difficult to bend accurately. Any tips?

Measure and lightly mark your bend points in pencil or with a fine marker. Use flat-nosed pliers or a simple bending jig (a pair of nails in a scrap of wood works well) to get consistent angles. Test-fit frequently against the body before committing to glue, and trim the ends only after you’re happy with the shape.

The headlamps don’t seem to stay in place. How can I secure them?

Lightly clean any paint or dust from the mounting points and from the base of each headlamp. Use a small drop of superglue applied with a cocktail stick or fine wire, rather than directly from the bottle, to avoid excess glue. Hold each lamp in position for a few seconds until the glue grabs.

Some surfaces look slightly rough from the 3D printing. How should I smooth them?

A gentle rub with fine wet-and-dry paper (around 600–1000 grit) used dry is usually enough to smooth PLA surfaces. Focus on visible flat areas such as cab sides and roof. Avoid over-sanding edges and detail, and always remove dust before painting.

Do I need to prime the pre-coloured PLA before painting?

While the parts are pre-coloured, a primer coat is recommended if you plan to repaint. Use a plastic-compatible primer suitable for PLA, applied in light coats. This helps acrylic or enamel paints adhere better and gives a more even finish.

Which paints work best on this model?

Both acrylic and enamel paints work well on PLA, as noted in the product details. Acrylics are quick-drying and ideal for brush or airbrush work, while enamels give a durable finish and longer working time. Always apply in thin layers to preserve the fine detail.

Can I weather the Wickham to match my existing rolling stock?

Yes, the model takes weathering very nicely. You can use washes, dry-brushing, and powders over your base paint. Just ensure the underlying paint is fully cured, and consider sealing the finished model with a clear matt or satin varnish.

How should I fit and paint the brass wire handrails?

It’s usually easiest to bend and test-fit the handrails first, then remove them for painting. You can either:

  • Paint the brass wire separately and touch up after fitting, or
  • Fit the handrails and then carefully brush-paint them in situ.

Use superglue sparingly at the fixing points, and avoid flooding the area so you keep the handrails looking fine and to scale.
