GN15 Explosive / Gunpowder Wagon – Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is included in this GN15 wagon kit?
The kit includes one bogie frame, two coupling blocks, one single gunpowder wagon body, and two sets of 12.5 mm diameter spoked wheels. In total you receive four grey resin-printed pieces plus two wheelsets, supplied unassembled (where needed), unprimed, and unpainted.
What scale and gauge is this wagon designed for?
This wagon is built specifically with GN-15 operations in mind, making it ideal for layouts that model Welsh-style quarry scenes and industrial narrow-gauge operations in that format.
What material is the wagon made from?
All parts are resin printed in grey. The pieces are cleaned and cured by hand before dispatch, with supports removed and only minor finishing typically required.
Is the wagon ready to run straight out of the box?
The wagon is supplied as a kit: unassembled (if needed), unprimed, and unpainted. You will need to assemble the resin parts, fit the 12.5 mm spoked wheelsets, and then prime and paint the model before adding it to your layout.
How much finishing work should I expect to do?
Support marks are carefully removed during preparation, but some fine sanding may still be required to achieve a perfectly smooth finish before priming and painting. This is normal for resin-printed kits and only light work is usually needed.
Is this wagon safe for representing explosive or gunpowder loads on my layout?
Yes, the wagon is a resin model intended for model railway use only. It is a safe way to represent explosive or gunpowder traffic on your GN-15 layout; it is not designed to carry any real explosive materials.
My wagon arrived with small surface marks. Is that normal?
Minor marks from the resin printing and support removal process are normal. These are usually removed with a little fine sanding before priming. Once primed and painted, these small imperfections typically disappear.
The resin feels delicate. How should I handle it?
Resin can be quite delicate, so handle the parts gently, especially thin sections and corners. Avoid dropping the pieces and try not to apply twisting force when assembling. Lay parts on a soft surface while working to reduce the risk of accidental damage.
What should I do if a part arrives damaged?
If you notice any damage on arrival, please contact the seller with clear photos of the affected parts and the packaging. They will advise on the best way forward. Please note that breakages after the item has arrived safely cannot be covered.
Can I modify or detail the wagon further?
Yes, the kit is a good base for extra detailing. You can add your own details such as weathering, additional fittings, or load representations using standard modelling materials, taking care not to stress the resin parts.
Can I use different wheels instead of the supplied 12.5 mm spoked wheels?
The kit is supplied with two sets of 12.5 mm diameter spoked wheels that match the intended design. If you choose to substitute other wheels, ensure they are compatible with GN-15 operations and that the axle and flange sizes suit the bogie frame and your track.
Is the wagon suitable for children?
The resin parts and small wheelsets make this kit more suitable for adult modellers or supervised older children. It is not a toy and contains small, delicate components that can break or be swallowed.
My wheels do not turn freely. What can I check?
If the 12.5 mm spoked wheels feel tight, check that the bogie frame is free of any small resin nubs left from support removal, and that the axle seating points are clean. A very light pass with a fine file or abrasive can help. Do not force the axles, as the resin is delicate.
The wagon rocks or wobbles on the track. How can I fix this?
First, make sure the wheelsets are fully seated and parallel. Check that the bogie frame is sitting flat and that no resin flash or debris is caught under the frame. On a flat piece of track, gently adjust the wheelsets so all wheels touch the rail evenly.
A small part snapped during handling. Can it be repaired?
In many cases, small resin breaks can be repaired using a suitable model adhesive designed for resin or cyanoacrylate (super glue). Ensure both surfaces are clean and dry, apply a tiny amount of glue, and hold the parts in place until set. Allow full curing time before handling again.
The paint is not adhering well to the resin. What should I do?
Before painting, wash the resin parts gently in warm water with a mild detergent and let them dry completely. Then apply a suitable primer for resin models. Once properly primed, most hobby paints will adhere much better and give a more durable finish.
There are visible layer lines after priming. How can I smooth them out?
If you notice fine print lines after your first coat of primer, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit abrasive (e.g. 800–1200 grit), then apply another thin layer of primer. Repeat as needed until the surface looks smooth and ready for your top coats.
How should I prepare the parts before priming?
Remove any remaining dust or sanding residue, then gently wash the parts in warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Let them dry completely. Inspect for any remaining support marks and sand lightly if needed. Once clean and dry, you are ready to prime.
What type of primer works best on this resin?
Use a primer suitable for resin miniatures or model kits. Whether you choose brush-on or spray, apply in thin, even coats to avoid obscuring detail. Always follow the primer manufacturer’s instructions for drying times.
Any tips for painting and weathering a quarry gunpowder wagon?
After priming, build up your colours in thin layers. For a quarry look, many modellers like muted, slightly worn finishes with subtle weathering. You can use washes and dry-brushing to pick out plank lines and metalwork, keeping in mind that the base kit is supplied unpainted so you can tailor the finish to your own layout’s style.
