FAQ – Product FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What scale is this driver figure and how tall is it?
This driver figure is G-Scale 1:22.5 and is approximately 59 mm tall, making it a good match for layouts that use similar scales such as LGB and Bachmann.
How was this figure created?
The figure was 3D scanned from a real person to capture realistic proportions, facial features and natural poses, then produced as a high-detail resin print.
Is the figure supplied painted?
No, the figure is supplied unpainted. This allows you to paint it to suit your own railway, era and livery preferences.
Where is the model printed?
The model is printed in the UK using high detail resin, then cleaned and cured by hand before packing.
Is this figure suitable for children?
No, these items are not toys and are not suitable for minors. The small parts can present a choking hazard and the resin material is delicate.
How is the figure packaged and shipped?
Your figure is dispatched by Royal Mail 2nd Class in eco-friendly packaging. The outer packing uses recycled materials and is fully recyclable, while the inner packing is acid free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.
My figure arrived broken in the post, what should I do?
If your figure appears to have been damaged during transit, please take clear photos of the damage and the packaging and contact us. While we cannot be responsible for breakages after safe delivery, we will do our best to help and make things right if it was broken in the post.
The resin feels delicate. How should I handle it?
Resin figures can be quite fragile, especially around thinner parts. Handle the model by the sturdier areas, avoid dropping it and keep it away from heavy items on your workbench to prevent accidental damage.
There are small marks or lines on my figure. Is this normal?
Because each figure is 3D printed, cleaned and cured by hand, you may see very fine layer lines or tiny support marks. These are normal for resin prints and can usually be smoothed with light finishing before priming.
Can I use this figure outdoors on a garden railway?
The figure is printed in high detail resin, which many modellers use successfully outdoors. For best results, give it a good primer coat and durable top coats, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight or extremes of temperature where possible.
Can I modify or convert the figure?
Yes, many modellers enjoy converting figures by repositioning arms, adding accessories or changing headgear. Just bear in mind that resin is brittle, so cuts and drilling should be done gently and carefully.
Is this figure sold under license?
Yes, this model is sold under commercial license from Design Scan Print 3D.
The figure will not stand up properly. How can I fix this?
If the figure does not stand securely, check that the feet and base area are flat. You can gently sand the bottom of the feet on fine sandpaper laid flat on a hard surface. Many modellers also glue the figure to a small base or directly to the footplate or yard surface for extra stability.
There is a slight bend or warp in a part of the figure. What can I do?
Minor bends in thin resin parts can sometimes be corrected by carefully warming the area in hand-hot (not boiling) water, gently straightening it and then cooling it under cold water. Always test on a small area first and avoid excessive heat.
My primer is not sticking well to the figure. Why?
Occasionally, a trace of mould-release-like residue or skin oils can affect primer adhesion. Before priming, wash the figure gently in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Then apply a light mist coat of primer and build up gradually.
The surface looks slightly shiny after curing. Is that a problem?
A slight sheen is not usually an issue and will be covered by primer. If you prefer a completely matte surface, you can very lightly scuff the figure with a fine abrasive pad or very fine sandpaper, taking care not to lose detail.
Some small details look a bit soft. Can I sharpen them?
Very fine details can sometimes benefit from gentle cleaning with a sharp hobby blade or fine needle files. Work slowly and carefully, removing only a little material at a time so you do not damage the surrounding detail.
Do I need to clean the figure before priming?
Although all items are cleaned and cured by hand, it is good practice to give the figure a quick wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent, then rinse and let it dry fully before applying primer.
Which primers work well on this resin?
The figure can be primed with Halfords grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, both of which adhere well and show off the detail nicely.
How should I apply the primer?
Apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat. Keep the spray can moving, start spraying slightly off the figure and pass across it, then stop spraying once you are past the model. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
What type of paints can I use after priming?
Once properly primed, you can use your usual model paints, such as acrylics or enamels, according to your preference. The primer provides the key, so choose paints that are compatible with your chosen primer.
Any tips for painting this driver for a realistic look?
For a realistic finish, try the following:
- Use a mid-tone base coat for clothing, then add lighter highlights and darker shadows.
- Pick out small details like buttons, cap band and boots to bring the figure to life.
- Use thin layers of paint so you do not obscure the fine scanned detail.
How can I protect the paintwork once finished?
After the paint is fully dry, you can apply a clear matt or satin varnish suitable for miniatures. This helps protect the finish from handling and minor knocks, especially on frequently used locomotives.
