FAQ – Product FAQs

NG7 Corrugated Roof Engine Stand – FAQ

What exactly is this NG7 engine stand?

This is a 3D printed engine stand with a corrugated roof, wooden construction and a brick back wall, designed as a loco parking and light maintenance shelter for 7mm or ON30 scale model railway layouts.

What scale is it suitable for?

The engine stand is designed for 7mm scale and ON30 layouts, making it ideal for O scale narrow gauge and similar setups.

What are the overall dimensions?

The approximate footprint is 98mm x 72mm, and the height is around 85mm. Dimensions may vary slightly due to the nature of 3D printing.

How many parts does the model come in?

The building comes as three separate 3D printed pieces in a three-colour combination of brick, wood and black, plus laser cut glazing.

Is the locomotive or any figures included?

No, the sale is for the unpainted engine stand building and laser cut glazing only. Locomotives, wagons and O-scale figures shown in photos are for size comparison and are available separately from other listings.

Where is the model produced and shipped from?

All models are printed and made in the UK and shipped from stock, ready for you to assemble, prime, paint and place straight onto your layout.

Can I use the model straight out of the box without painting?

Yes, you can use it immediately. It is printed in individual colours (brick, wood and black), so it looks good unpainted, but it is also designed to be customized and weathered if you wish.

Is the model supplied painted or primed?

No, the model is unprimed and unpainted. All pieces come bare from the printer with supports removed so you can apply your own primer, paints and weathering.

What materials and paint types are recommended?

Normal automotive (car) primer and acrylic paints work very well on this 3D printed surface. Many modellers use a grey or red oxide primer, followed by acrylic base colours and weathering powders or washes.

Is this suitable for beginners to model railways?

Yes. The stand is simple to assemble, easy to paint, and can be used unpainted if you prefer. It makes an excellent first scenic structure as well as a nice addition for experienced modellers.

How durable is the 3D printed model?

The model is robust enough for normal layout use and handling, but like all detailed scenic items it should be handled with care, especially around thinner sections and edges.

Why can I see lines on the surface of the print?

Visible layer lines are a normal part of 3D printing. They are usually subtle at normal viewing distances on a layout but may be more noticeable if examined very closely or under strong light.

What should I do if there are small bumps, blemishes or stringing?

Minor imperfections such as bumps, tiny blemishes or fine plastic strands (stringing) can usually be tidied up with:

  • Light sanding using fine-grit sandpaper or sanding sticks
  • A sharp craft knife to carefully scrape or trim stray strands
  • Gentle heat from a hairdryer to soften and remove very fine strings

Why is the underside not perfectly smooth?

The underside may show marks or white patches from the adhesive used during printing. This is normal and is usually hidden once the model is placed on the layout or lightly sanded and primed.

The parts do not seem to fit perfectly. What can I do?

Due to slight variations in 3D printing, a tiny amount of fine sanding or filing on mating surfaces can help parts seat neatly. Test-fit everything dry first, adjust as needed, then glue once you are happy with the fit.

What if my model arrives damaged in the post?

If the piece is broken during shipping, please take clear photos of the damage and contact the seller. They will do their best to help based on the images you provide.

Can you replace parts if I break them during assembly?

Unfortunately, breakages that occur after delivery cannot be covered. Careful handling, dry-fitting and gentle sanding will help avoid accidental damage during assembly.

Do I need to assemble the building?

Yes, the model is supplied unassembled in three main pieces plus glazing. You will need to test-fit, glue the parts together and add the glazing before painting or placing it on your layout.

What glue should I use to assemble it?

A good quality plastic-compatible or cyanoacrylate (super glue) adhesive works well. Apply sparingly, especially around visible joints and the glazing, to avoid excess glue marks.

How do I prepare the model for painting?

Lightly sand any support marks or rough spots, remove dust with a soft brush, then apply a thin, even coat of car primer. Once the primer is dry, you can paint with acrylics and add weathering.

Any tips for painting the brick, wood and corrugated roof?

Many modellers like to:

  • Base-coat the brick in a mid red or brown, then add a mortar wash
  • Use varied browns and greys on the wood for a weathered look
  • Paint the corrugated roof in dark greys, then dry-brush rust tones

Always work in thin layers and build up the effect gradually.

Can I weather the model to look older or dirtier?

Yes, it takes weathering very well. Acrylic washes, dry-brushing and weathering powders can be used to add soot, rust, oil stains and general grime, especially around the loco parking area and roof.

Should I install the glazing before or after painting?

Most modellers find it easier to paint and weather the main structure first, then add the laser cut glazing at the end using a clear-drying adhesive, wiping away any excess immediately.
