Product details

This is a neat little caddy holder for the Bachmann controller. Its a controller I love to use on various shelf and diorama layouts and with the caddy it means that there is somewhere neat to hold it. (we re-use it on several setups). The cutout ensures that all the legends of the controller, buttons and switches are unobstructed. The kit can be painted as well if you like.

The kit is precision laser cut and can be simply glued together with a little wood glue. The 44211 & 46605 will fit, as will probably others with the same case design. Also supplied is a green felt backing to provide a snug soft fit for the controller if needed. I use it with the 46605 but a customer has not used with their 44211 as it seems the extra thickness on the plastic feet take up the slack.

Two holes are available so that it can be screwed to wherever you like.

(the controller in the pic is not included of course)

FAQ – Product FAQs

What is this caddy holder designed for?

This caddy holder is designed specifically for the Bachmann controller, providing a neat and secure place to store it on shelf and diorama layouts. It keeps the controller in a fixed position while still leaving all the legends, buttons and switches fully visible and unobstructed.

Which Bachmann controllers will fit this caddy?

The caddy is known to fit the Bachmann 44211 and 46605 controllers, as well as others that share the same case design. The fit may vary slightly depending on the exact feet or casing, but these two models are confirmed by use.

Is the controller included with the caddy?

No, the controller is not included. Any controllers shown in photos are for illustration only; the product is the laser-cut caddy holder kit and the green felt backing.

Can I use this caddy on multiple layouts?

Yes, the caddy is ideal for use across several setups. Many modellers move the same Bachmann controller between different shelf and diorama layouts, and the caddy provides a consistent, tidy mounting point wherever you choose to install it.

How is the caddy constructed?

The kit is precision laser cut and supplied as parts that you simply glue together with a little wood glue. Once assembled, it forms a snug holder for your controller, with a cutout that keeps all the legends and controls clear.

Can the caddy be painted?

Yes, the kit can be painted if you wish. You can finish it to match your layout fascia, control panel, or room decor, or leave it as supplied if you prefer a more natural look.

My controller feels loose in the caddy. What should I do?

If your controller feels a little loose, use the supplied green felt backing to create a snug, soft fit. The felt can take up any slack and stop the controller from wobbling while still allowing easy removal.

The controller is very tight in the holder. Is that normal?

Some controllers, such as the 44211 with slightly thicker plastic feet, can feel tighter in the caddy. This is usually because the extra thickness on the feet takes up the slack. Check that the parts are fully glued and square, and that no excess glue or paint is narrowing the opening.

The legends and buttons look partially covered. Have I assembled it wrong?

The cutout is designed so that all legends, buttons and switches are unobstructed. If anything is covered, the most likely cause is that a panel has been glued in the wrong orientation or position. Compare your build with the product photos and gently adjust or re-glue if needed.

The caddy feels wobbly when mounted. How can I stabilise it?

Ensure that the two mounting holes are both used and that the surface you are fixing to is flat. Use suitable screws for your baseboard or wall material and tighten them evenly. If the surface is uneven, you can add a thin packing shim behind one corner before tightening the screws.

The felt backing is not sitting flat. How do I fix this?

If the felt is wrinkling or lifting, trim it to size first, then apply it to a clean, dry surface inside the caddy. Smooth it from one end to the other as you press it down. If you are using adhesive, apply a thin, even layer to avoid lumps that can cause unevenness.

What glue should I use to assemble the kit?

A small amount of standard wood glue is all you need. Apply a thin bead along the joints, press the parts together, and wipe away any excess before it dries. Allow the glue to cure fully before mounting or placing the controller in the caddy.

Do I need any special tools to assemble the caddy?

No special tools are required. Most modellers will manage with just wood glue and something to help hold the parts square while they dry, such as small clamps or elastic bands. A craft knife can be useful for cleaning up any tiny laser tabs if present.

How do I mount the caddy to my layout or wall?

The caddy has two holes so it can be screwed to wherever you like, such as a layout fascia, control panel board, or wall near your railway. Choose appropriate screws and wall plugs (if needed) for the material you are fixing into, and ensure the caddy is level before fully tightening.

Can I easily remove the controller once the caddy is mounted?

Yes, the caddy is designed to hold the controller securely while still allowing you to lift it out when needed. The cutout keeps the controls clear and accessible, so you can unplug and move the controller between different layouts without dismantling the caddy.

What type of paint should I use on the kit?

You can use typical hobby paints suitable for wood or laser-cut kits, such as acrylic model paints. Apply thin coats to avoid filling the joints or reducing the internal space where the controller sits, especially around the cutout.

Should I paint the parts before or after assembly?

Both approaches work, but many modellers find it easiest to assemble the caddy first, let the glue cure, and then paint the outside surfaces. If you paint before assembly, keep paint away from the glue joints so the wood glue can bond properly.

Can I paint the inside where the controller sits?

You can, but use light coats and test fit your controller as you go. Heavy paint buildup can tighten the fit. If you are using the green felt backing, you may prefer to leave the main contact areas unpainted and rely on the felt for a neat interior finish.

Will painting affect how the felt backing sticks?

If you are applying the felt over painted surfaces, make sure the paint is fully dry and not glossy or greasy. Lightly keying a glossy surface with fine sandpaper can help adhesives grip better. Alternatively, apply the felt directly to bare or lightly sealed wood inside the caddy.

Can I customise the look to match my control panel?

Yes, that is one of the pleasures of this kit. You can paint it to match your fascia colour, weather it to blend into a scenic backdrop, or keep it clean and simple for a modern control panel look, while still enjoying a neat, purpose-made holder for your Bachmann controller.
