FAQ – Product FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What scale is this driver figure and how big is it?

The driver is in 16mm scale (1:19) and is approximately 66 mm when seated. He is suitable as a driver either mounted in a cab or standing around in the yard on 16mm, Garden Railway and SM32 layouts.

How are these figures created?

The figures are 3D scanned from real people, which gives them very realistic looks and natural poses. They are then produced using high-detail resin printing here in the UK.

Is the figure supplied painted?

No, the figure is supplied unpainted. This allows you to finish and paint it to match your own railway, era and colour schemes.

What material is the figure made from?

The figure is printed in high-detail resin. All items are cleaned and cured by hand before dispatch, so they are ready for priming and painting after any minor finishing.

How is the item packaged and shipped?

The figure is dispatched by Royal Mail 2nd Class in eco-friendly packaging. The exterior packaging is made in part from recycled materials and is fully recyclable, while the interior packing materials are acid-free and made from 99% recycled pulp fibres.

Is this product suitable for children?

No, these items are not toys and are not suitable for minors. They contain small parts and can be a choking hazard, so they are intended for adult modellers and collectors only.

What should I do if my figure arrives broken in the post?

If the figure is damaged during delivery, please take clear photos of the damage and the packaging and contact us. While we cannot be responsible for breakages after safe delivery, we will always see what we can do to help and make things good if the piece is broken in the post.

Can you replace figures that I accidentally break after delivery?

Resin can be quite delicate and we sadly cannot be held responsible for breakages once your item has arrived safely. However, you are welcome to get in touch and we will advise where we can on possible repairs or options.

My figure has slight lines or a small blemish – is this normal?

Because the figures are 3D printed and then cleaned and cured by hand, very minor surface marks or lines can sometimes appear. These are usually easy to smooth out with light finishing before priming and painting.

The figure looks a little shiny or slick – can I paint it straight away?

Yes, you can paint it after priming, but some modellers prefer to give the surface a very light rub with fine abrasive or a gentle wash in mild soapy water and allow it to dry fully before priming. This can help the primer and paint adhere more consistently.

What if the figure does not fit my locomotive cab as expected?

As the driver is approximately 66 mm seated in 16mm scale, cab sizes can vary between manufacturers. If he is a tight fit, you may need to adjust his mounting position or slightly modify the cab interior. If you are unsure, test-fit the unpainted figure first before final finishing.

Why does the figure feel fragile compared to plastic figures?

High-detail resin allows for much finer detail and more realistic poses than many traditional plastics, but it can be more delicate. Handle the figure by the more solid parts of the body, avoid bending thin areas and try not to drop it to prevent breakages.

How should I prepare the figure before painting?

All figures are cleaned and cured by hand, but you may wish to:

  • Inspect the figure for any tiny supports or nubs and carefully remove them.
  • Lightly smooth any visible lines or marks with fine abrasive.
  • Ensure the figure is dry and free of dust before priming.

Which primers work well on this resin?

The figure can be primed with Halfords grey primer or Tamiya Fine Surface Primer, both of which adhere well to the high-detail resin and provide a good base for further painting.

Do I need to wash the figure before priming?

The figures are cleaned before dispatch, so further washing is not always necessary. However, some modellers like to give them a quick rinse in mild soapy water, followed by a thorough dry, to remove any remaining handling residue before applying primer.

Can I use brush paints or do I need an airbrush?

You can use either brush paints or an airbrush over a suitable primer. The fine detail of the 3D scanned figure works well with careful brush painting, and an airbrush can be used for smooth base coats if you prefer.

How can I mount the seated driver in my cab or on my layout?

Once painted and fully dry, you can mount the driver using your preferred modelling adhesive suitable for resin and your cab material. Test-fit first to find a natural seated or standing position, then glue carefully, avoiding excess adhesive on visible areas.

Do I need to do any sanding or filling on the figure?

Most figures only require minor finishing, if any. If you notice tiny print artefacts or a small gap, you can gently sand with fine abrasive or use a small amount of modelling filler. Always complete sanding and filling before priming.

Can I leave the figure unpainted on my layout?

You can if you wish, but the resin is supplied ready for finishing and will look its best once primed and painted. Painting also helps protect the surface and brings out the realistic detail captured by the 3D scanning process.
